Updates from Monterey

Post by Tom Wilson »

It is foggy and cold (at least for California) here in Monterey, but things are starting out nicely. Got in town in time to catch the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic arriving at the PB Lodge after a 1,500 mile drive from Seattle. Among the Duesenbergs, Lincolns, Alphas, Bugatti's, Mercedes, Rolls Royces, etc, was Marty and Molly Ann Moore of Colorado in GTE 4289! They said it was a great trip, that the GTE performed well and was was in its element on the Washington, Oregon and California highways. Look for a write up in the next GTE newsletter. Also making the trek was the Ingred Bergman/Roberto Rossellini 375MM PF Berlinetta (0456AM) and a beautiful Lusso. It was a most impressive group!

We are having a great time here, meeting so many of the folks that we have only met before online. And of course, the view is spectacular! Here is a small sample of what was on the Tour 'd Elegance and then parked on Ocean Avenue.

Note to Self: When at Concorso, a dignified exit is just as important as a dignified entrance...

Couldn't afford The Quail, so headed out to Concorso Italiano, which turned out to be a blast. Met a bunch of GTE owners and saw great cars. Fortunately, the sun never came out, so the temperatures stayed pretty decent. A few shots to give you a taste.

My battery died mid-post last night, so here are more. As you can see, the view from anywhere on the golf course is spectacular...

Ken Thomas drove 2569 (the Black car)from Los Angeles as he does every year. This year he got to park next to Dick Smith, who drove down from the San Francisco Bay area. Dick has owned 4327 since 1968!

I am afraid that the weather and my poor photographic skills did not let me capture how wonderful this aqua color is on a GTE.

If you get the GTE Newsletter (and if not, shame on you!) you read Tom Yang's article on making your radiator work properly for these hot summer months. Dick Smith added a shroud and a manual on/off switch to his fan and says it really keeps the car cool! A simple fix for an age old problem.

Believe it or not, it is not all about Ferrari's! Every kind of Italian car you could imagine was there and a few others. This year was the 45th anniversary of the first Maserati Ghibli and the club had quite a turnout.

It occurred to me today while posting that I was so busy shooting photos of cars and talking to owners that I forgot to take pictures of the people! I will try to remedy that today at the track. With that, I am off...

thanks for posting all this, Tom! It's very nice to see Carol Roush in the group shot.

It looks like vintage Ferraris have made a big comeback at Concorso; the last time I went several years ago, the vintage showing was getting pretty thin.
