heater

Post by GEODAVKY »

I cannot get any heat to come out. There are heater hoses on the right and left side in the engine compartment that have valves on them which I assume should be screwed out so water can flow through them. Correct? Is the the heater control valve on the rear of the block near the firewall?

the heater valve at the firewall might be clogged, it's possible that the diaphragm is bad but first make sure that the valve opens and closes. They are available. After the car is warmed up, the heater hoses should get warm as the water runs through, if there's no circulation you won't have any heat.

Those hoses go to each heater box mounted inside the front fenders behind the splash panels.

The one comes from the heater box. The other goes to the X-connection in the lower radiator hose.

So the pressurized flow is up the valve base, through the valve (if open), to each heater box, then to the manual turn valves and if open, back to the lower radiator hose. So the cable operated valve controls flow to both heater box, while the manual valves control the flow to either the driver or passenger side individually.

So the manual valves to let hot water pass through need to be unscrewed (out)?

by looking at the picture of your heater valve, I noticed a part missing, there's supposed to be an arm coming off the center of your valve where the control cable attaches to open and close the valve. I would send you a picture but I have problems uploading pictures on this sight. If you need a picture, give me your email and I'll send you one.

There's hot water moving through the valve, but I cannot get any heat. Any ideas?

I had take the arm off as I was going to take the top off to the valve, but took a hose off and could see that hot water was coming through.

Hi George,

So if you have coolant coming out of the cable controlled valve, you need to continue the process by seeing if hot water is getting to the manual shut offs. Yes, they should be turned out to open the flow of coolant. The coolant follows a loop from the back of the engine block through the heater cores, and back to the fitting down by the radiator. Somewhere there is blockage.

The picture of the control valve...... oozing of coolant from the top of the valve indicates that a part of the valve that is supposed to stay dry (i.e., the top) is now getting wet. This is a good indication of ruptured diaphragm.

Is the diaphragm rebuildable?

Yes. When I've ordered this diaphragm from Partsource, I tell Geof what size diameter the valve is for the right part. There are a couple of sizes.

I use a thin smear of silicone sealant on the edge of the seal to insure a leak free valve.

Even if I fix the diaphragm what will that do to get me heat? I took the outlet hose off and hot water is coming through the valve.

The diaphraghm is not really rebuildable. I made one from inner tube and it lasted about a year. TRutlands sells them.

This might be a stupid question, but are the blowers working?
