Hi Ron,rbgdvm wrote:Can anyone give me an idea what it should cost to rebuild the water pump on a GTE? It appears that I have a leak from both the seal and the bearing.
Thanks.

It should take about half a day but realistically a day as long as there aren't any issues. WIth a near 50 year old car and many hands working on these cars, you never know what you might find. Here's what's involved:
drain radiator
remove accessory belt
remove water pipe and associated hoses
unbolt and remove top idle pulley assembly
remove nuts to WP
remove outer housing
remove impeller keeping shaft in place. (if the shaft comes out, the timing chain drops and you'll have to pull the engine to fix!)
carefully remove wp seal
clean the area up and install new seal
clean out wp housing, paint.
Check the face of the impeller and replace backing plate if surface it scored
reinstall everything
It's involved and I'm sure there are a couple steps that I've forgotten to add, but that's basically it.
There can be issues when taking things apart, but let's be positive!
