clutch problems

Post by 250GT »

Hi Guys,
do have somebody here already has expierance with the upgrading clutch offered by Tanner?
i just bought on.
I have big problems with the original clutch
I live in the middle of a city and own a privatparking under my living there is only one problem:
to get out there is a sloop /Steep hill with a curve of 20% or more
I used to drive with a comp engine witch runs very rich and a relative long ratio 8x34
so it smells every day heavily.
last 20K km I used 4 clutch plates!!
to get the right slip moment is almost impossible.
I will not wait to get out till engine is warm .
here ar some pics compared with the "old " three finger clutch

will keep up dating of progress
ciao

Some more info on this clutch package
Its announced with these words :

"This new far superior clutch package is designed to replace
the vintage FITCHEL & SACHS clutch assembly for the 250GTs and 275GTs.
This system offers a new diaphragm clutch with a modern disc and
a new sleeve for the throw out bearing which is included."

So this will cover all cars from 1958-1964 including all 330Gts !!
I know you all used the 7X32 ratio(overdrive standard)
which is an far more comfortable to start.
My expectations are these:
the drive plate should be suitable for road use and light Comp. work( hill climbs).

The design features damper springs arranged radially around the hub centre which together with facing segments provides progressive engagement and I hope with much greater degree of clutch control. the best high performance material - the best material would be organic- but not sure about this lining I think standard, but the facings over 200mm diameter being metalbacked to will give much higher burst ?strength( druckbefestigung).

Ciao

The height of the bearing is clearly diff.
If some body need sizes must ask fast in a few day its gone .
to do research in advance cannot harm.

So yesterday on my free friday afternoon i took out the whole stuff.
one chair ,driveshaft, and gearbox plus belly pan not inn this order .
to remove the cotton pins in the back cost me again a lot of time.
dont shout on the fast made snapshots by iPH.
Normally you need NOT to take out the gearbox . make a pace of 20cm is enough
but I would check the return spring and evtl oil leaks of the prim.GB-axle
my gear box can be easily handed by one person because its rather light.
the body is made out of magnesium.I found it in the 80th
most people think they use Mg out of weight reduction
yes Mg is pros. 30% lighter than Al.
but the main reason they use Mg was of heat exchange if this brings much at an GB is doubtful.
the disc shows a heavy wear on the flywheel side the other side looks good ,to day the flywheel will be reconditioned by a patient of me
that how I like it
hope to put back every thing back sunday.
so a da to clean some parts

More will come to close the summer hole.............

Ferrari were- imo- made for short leg people that why I change the tower on the GB see pics

Sunday update
The flywheel arrived yesterday evening ,
So the work continues this morning
Will took of the flywheel less than 0.1mm to get it plain and to create so a kind of roughness.
The train eye have already seen that the damper springs were touched. see worn disc above.
this planing cannot be done till the eternity .
next time a new one would be preferable
So all the mechanic are back in place ,just in time to see the F1 start in Valencia.
that comical wooden stick is my center point which I made out of a worn broom,
and function better than my universal "snap-on" part for me.
and it hold over 20 years now

here some pics.

whats left?
have to adjust the freewayspace and bellypan which will stay off a few days if better adjustment is necessary.

Best

how to keep you're hands clean?
tip.
I use 2 pair of latex gloves at the same time.
the one of you're dominant hand will cut fast, simple put one over again and you hand will stay untouched and clean.
realy effective.

Other small tip again from an amateur.
I tried to push the GB-bellhouse back on the engine threads by pushing force over the gear lever.
This is wrong because the GB is in the 1th or 3th gear by doing this way.
the primarily axle must run fee- in neutral- to find his way in the tooth of the disk
small mistake but with great impact.
Normally at an new clutch package you get some grace for the prim. axle of the gearbox
this will cause a sliding mechanics situation and get every thing more smooth.
Aloso F1 is doing great.

best

Hi,

Last week I received interesting NOS pressure plate what has double springs inside for avoiding the slip between disc. The "claws" are also slightly different from the original 250/330 fischer & sach pressure plate but this does not make any problem for the release bearing. For installation no need extra modifications, seems to be "bolt on".

I am curious to see how it works.

Regards
Martin

Hello Martin

thas an interesting diagram,
but I wonder how it can work and whats its purpose
the space between the flywheel and disc is about 3 mm( normal freeway space)
that means partnr 3,4,5 must have place within this reach.
hard to inmaging.
should it help to disangage more smooth ?
the spring on the otherside must press aganis this springforce
can you place a pic of this parts?

ciao
