Fuse panel GTE/series III #4879
Fuse panel GTE/series III #4879
Hello,
I've reached a restoration stage with #4879 where attention needs the sawdust made fuse panel.
When I opened the panel cover I understood there are components missing and new panel must be made from non burning material (tekstoliit, my language)
Sorry, but safety first!
https://picasaweb.google.com/1027747673 ... 6245086658
Missing components was:
1. Ceam Deviolux headlight switching relay
2. Lucas SP40 overdrive relay
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/d ... directlink
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/p ... directlink
I had change to buy three origional Ceam Deviolux relays, so I bought them all because they are so rare to find these days.
With Lucas SP40, things are easier.
So, things what mess my mind are two relays.
As you see the first picture, there is a Bosch relay sitting in the SP40 place. And the second is a big Hella round relay on the firewall.
Okay, my III series I have Bosch alternator with Hella voltage regulator bolted to wheel arche, but what the for is big Hella ?
https://picasaweb.google.com/1027747673 ... 0836638706
Plus you will see extra 2fuse box bottom on the fuse panel plastic "connection rail" .
What is that? This car has electrical glass washer and extra electrical horn fitted. Is it for them?

https://picasaweb.google.com/1027747673 ... 7260537810
Some series are fitted foot operated high/low beam switch, why then you need Deviolux at all?
Thanks for attention!
Regards
Martin

Re: Fuse panel GTE/series III #4879
Hi Martin,
You may be confusing the foot operated switch for a high/low bean switch, but it's actually a windshield washer pump connected to the wiper motor. It's supposed to swipe the windshield once when you pump the washer. The high beam switch is operated from the lever on the steering column.
I would guess the large Hella relay is probably for the extra horn added later.

Hi Tom, thanks!
1) The extra electrical horn has his own relay on the bracket

2) At the dashboard you will found extra holes for four buttons. Interested as it is one bigger butter is for starter solenoid (not from the key switch). The second button is for electrical horn. And probably the third is for windshield washer pump
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/a ... directlink
3) Picture from the 80's, before the dismantling. The big Hella is still mystery for me, from the picture shown at right side of the fuse panel cover.
Bosch alternator charging relay stays on the wheel arche.
https://picasaweb.google.com/1027747673 ... 0620519234
4) Foot activating switch is dipper style switch (it is Bosch). Washer foot switch is something else, usually water hose will come thru it.
Is it possible to find factory listing what serial nr. cars had Marelli or Bosch equipment?
#4879 is quite late series, end of the GTE production line.
Thanks,
Regards

Go back to garage, impregnate the original cardboard with black resin paint and put it back, you naughty boy!!!!Martin M wrote:Kare, shoot something!....
Re: Fuse panel GTE/series III #4879
German foot switch for hi/low beam is a very common conversion in Europe as Beetles are everywhere. Fat chance a swedish garage could figure out how a deviolux works, let alone connect five wires correctly!!! My car had one too. As soon as I found it, it went out of the door and into the night - followed by Super-Flasher Made in U.S.A that turned into super-fly-through-the-air-as-I-watch-you.
Bosch components are later replacements for sure, Enzo used them on a handful of show cars to build some edge for negotiating prices with Marelli, but that's it. Same for Solex carbs vs. Weber.
Your car came from Sweden and Sweden is all about Bosch. Old heritage as Germans used to own all electric industry in Sweden cleverly hidden under brand names like "Robo Electric Ab". Nobody would ever figure that Robo stood for Robert Bosch...
Best wishes, Kare

The Deviolux is just a relay inside the box. Nothing special:kare wrote:... Fat chance a swedish garage could figure out how a deviolux works, let alone connect five wires correctly!!! My car had one too. As soon as I found it, it went out of the door and into the night...

Here is a photo of 4247GT. Note that the Fiamm relay is mounted on a flange on the lower left of the Fuse Panel frame.
Re: Fuse panel GTE/series III #4879
Kare, yes, I admit that I have sophisticate the originality, but I am pretty sure my car will not burn down when I have short circuit under or near my fuse panel.
PS (Tuulilasinpyyhkijän moottorin ohella tulipalo tuhosi aikanaan auton sähkötaulun).
And mat spray is not also no big problem. The original sloppily drilled panel card can be as long he want with the car for show judges.... but in the trunk.
Yale, Sorry I did not really read so carefully the instruction of how to post pictures, don't happen again.
330GT and Tom W - thanks for the pics, great!

Re: Fuse panel GTE/series III #4879
My car burned because the new type of voltage regulator (IR50A to match the new 400 watt DN63 generator) had been mounted terminals down with them almost in contact with the bodywork. As soon as a carb flooded the B30+ (unfused battery plus) ignited the puddle. The installation was soon changed terminals now pointing yp.
Tom's is an early S.3 so it still has the flange. It was sawed off on later cars ant the horn relay relocated. I was very lucky to find a late S.3 board with cardboard and even wrinkle finnish in perfect shape. All I needed to do was adding the flange and installing the voltage regulator and it now looks 100% original.
Original electrics are of very high quality, so problems are very unlikely if only properly assembled.
