Re: Ashes to Ashes
As the prices of these ashtrays rise, I think someone will eventually reproduce these things. I'm waiting for the day they can be made in a 3D printer!

Tom,
Motion Products has that metal sintering maching that could "3d print" the ashtrays but I'm sure it would not be cheep.
Speaking of ashtrays one of my customers could with GTE 2217 could use a pair if ashtrays and a reverse light if anyone knows of some laying around somewhere.

Re: Ashes to Ashes
I wonder if there will ever be a need for repros, Italian players must have collected hundreds and hundreds of these from junkyards. I'm tempted to think that the large ones (later) collected from big Alfas (all scrapped now, let a handful here and there) are actually more common. And forget about 3D printers, they are good for reproducing castings, reproducing items made of rolled sheet metal will never work.
Besides, if 2217 never had a back-up light, why add one now? The early cars had a wiring set up for installation but did not have one installed. If it was my car, I would prefer to have the rear valance and bumper with no holes drilled for a stupid installation that will be different than the production version anyway as there is no provision and no bracket like on later cars...

My ashtray is not in the greatest shape nor do I have the inner tray so if any if you euro parts stash savants have a solution, I'm all ears. I did bid up to $350 for a new one on ebay in 1990. Guess I should have kept going.

Re: Ashes to Ashes
Kare, all well and good that 2217 did not come with a reverse lamp originally but somewhere along the way a hole was put in the car for the mounting and wiring of a reverse lamp so now the owner wants one to fill the holes. 2169 did not come with a reverse lamp and the transmission #5E had a boss where the reverse lamp switch should be but the hole wasn't even drilled so I'm with you that the early cars and a number of the European delivery cars had no reverse lights. Unfortunatly there are 50+ years of time between than and now so anything is possible at this point.
Yes as Yale has said I'm all ears as to the location and availability of European NOS sources for the ashtrays, I'm not in the market to buy and sell these things my customers just want then to complete there cars or cover the blank spot on their upholstry.

Re: Ashes to Ashes
On a second thought a Carello back up light might be the best light to install, as early S.1 cars didn't come with the provision & mounting bracket made for a Marchal 530. The Carello was used on PF Cabrios at the time, I think, mounts directly to the rear valance with a foot and looks as cool as they get. Re: Ashes to Ashes
Kare ,
The Marchal 530 has a bracket of his own
Like the 520 this bracket is bended back and fixated to the body
Marchal 520 was used on PF 2 ( end 1959 and 1960)
Marchal 530 ON 330GT and GTB.
what is right for early GTE I dont know.

Re: Ashes to Ashes
Heh, it's like with rear view mirrors and radio antennas: nothing's "right" as the back-up light was just an option in form of a wire in the bottom of the trunk.
Late in 1961 they added a provision where a Marchal 530 will right fit into - straight out of a box. I'd presume cars were then delivered with one too. As early GTEs have nothing there, I'd recommend the Carello. A Marchal would need a separate bracket - to match the bracket already attached (=uncool). Not sure what concours judges would think, but did they even notice all GTEs don't come with back-up light?

Even the Mini Cooper S seems to use then then.
