Horn button ferrari 1948-1952 ?

Post by 250GT » Sun Jan 20, 2013 10:06 am

Hello,
Does any body here know when Ferrari changed the background from silver to yellow in the horn button ?
The very early cars 1948-52 ? seems to have them all in silver behind the black jumping horse.
See pics below of original Nardi Wheels below.
This is clearly NO bleaching from the sun.
Most PB cars wear the yellow button now but seams incorrect to me.

Ciao

The fact I ask this question is, that I will know in which timewindow such Nardiwheel fitts .
I have seen them on 500F1, 166MM ,212S .
My hopes we on Dyke and Kare here, but they are probebly too young.

Some info,

the Yearbook 1993 try to give an overview of the changes in badges and scripts during the years
but nothing about the early hornbuttons, its a pity.

The old replica steeringwheels were made in the 80th and 90th
by Mr. Ortelli from Brescia his company was closed around 2002.
the originals can be found from the beginning 1948 till the1956th
the first TDF ( wrapped around window type)were suplied as last car with those nice steerings
those wheels are often seeen on PB now
they are missing the pattern engraving on the facing spokes

see below

The early color photographers didn't want to waste their expensive film on interiors, it seems.

The wavy pattern is called Guilloché, very fashionable decoration in metal craft and jewelry in the early days of industrialization. Real magic, that's why it's on the wheel too.

Kare,

not many people trust themself to say to be 100% sure.

So what do we have?
Have been one night long in the www.
to become a bitt cleverer.
All cars from 1947 seems to have replicawheels .
so I dont expect something of the button could be say reliable here
The first Ferrari with org. wheel, and so I suspect a real button was found in 1951.(yellow)
So I think the silverbackground must be used somewhere between 1948 and 1950.
Any help is welcome.

back in the right thread
The pics below shown a horn button with a machined hole above the horshead
function unknown.
seams useless to me.
This hole is drilled in a metalbackplate(siverpaint) or simple and alu-disk.
You can see some oxidation under the lense.

Question is still open,
in which years were these used ?

Will not bother you all more with this thread.
But one thing must be said.
For those who drive REAL classic rallies and races.
Do not use an old nice looking woodensteering wheel.
Those wheels can act like scapping ammunition in a frontal crash.
believe it or not
I did need in 1999(Classic marathon "Targa Espana") two hours to relieve a rallydriver to find all the wooden chips out of his face.
without Ultracain forte.
A "new" wheel will be much saver.
