is my clutch bad?

Post by GEODAVKY »

Today going up a mild grade when I accelerated the clutch was slipping. A rapid start from standstill and the clutch didn't seem slip. Another hard accerlation in 4th on level road and it again the clutch is slipping. Is the bad news that I need a new clutch in my 1967 330 GT?

Hi George,

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. Have you checked the adjustment?

Thanks Tom. I didn't know that the clutch was adjustable. I'll try that.

Can a clutch get fouled by too much oil leakage from the crankshaft or the input shaft of the gearbox?

Usually a leak from the rear main seal won't put oil on the clutch because it's behind the flywheel and the collar on the input shaft of the transmission helps prevent the same thing, but if the leak is bad enough, I'm sure it can foul a clutch.

Where do you access the adjustment? Is it under the car?

Yes, the adjustment is part of the slave cylinder attached to the side of the bell housing. You'll have to remove the belly pan if one is on your car.

Thanks for the info. I took the easy way out and took it to my friendly mechanic as I cannot lift the car high enough to work underneath.
