Pins 1, Bolts 4

Post by Lowell »

In my BUMP. SO? thread and in the last two posts in Darren's 330GT 2+2 Door Checkstrap Questions???? thread, we have the result of the poll, such as it is:

330 Door restraining strap attachment to body
five responses: 1 clevis pin, 4 bolts (as shown in my photo in my previous post.)

So I appears that if you have a clevis pins, you get bolts to be original. Otherwise 25 point off in judging.
But in this Ferrari world of ours, who knows for sure. Maybe pins were installed on Mondays, bolts on Tuesdays through Fridays.

So the next question is: How is the strap supposed to be finished: Zinc or body color?

Thats easy, ZINC plate.

The two old ones I have are zinc plate albeit rusty. You wouldn't paint zinc plate as the paint falls off and besides they run in the two "clamp" rollers in the door which grip the strap, so any paint would be quickly worn off.

Hi Tom,

Hmmm, I'd not considered Cadmium. Its got good corossion properties but is highly toxic. The process is banned in the UK and you'll only find it on aircraft over here.
That's not to say it wasn't used in the 1960's. Is there much Cadmium plate on Ferrari's then?

The check straps definately not painted lowell

Ferraris built prior to the 1970,s have almost NO zinc plating. It was all cadmium. Today, most restorers use zinc instead, due to its better and longer lasting protection, as well as the pollution issues. However, you have to be careful and not get it too bright.

Zinc plating also has a bluish tinge to it, while White Cad has a warmer to neutral color to it. The trick is to find a good cad plater. When it's applied thinly, it corrodes very easily, but when done right, it lasts pretty well.

Well, looking at the strap and how it slides, I agree that it is obvious that it cannot be painted.

This all started when I was down at Lowell's for a visit.

Since then, I came home and visited my car which is in the shop for a bare metal repaint. I measured the pins, etc.:
Head diameter 9.30mm
Pin diameter 5.60mm
Length including head 14.35mm
Head depth 2mm.

Hole diameter 6.04mm

So the pins are metric as the pin diameter of 1/4" is too large and 3/16" is too small. I don't think that you can find clevis pins in 7/32" diameter.

The clevis pin does look a lot better than a bolt and nut. Further, they weigh a few grams less and as we all know, weight is everything in a sports car (even a 2+2)! So I'm keeping my pins when I put the car back together.

They do look good Kerry. I agree that they look much better than a nut and bolt.

My old check straps measured a 6mm hole, so I imagine people have used M6 nuts and bolts, but pivoting on a threaded bolt is never a good Idea. Your pin at 5.6mm diameter seems a much better engineering solution.
I presume there is a washer on the bottom and split pin?

No there wasn't, just a cotter pin. However, as the car was apart when I bought it, I probably figured out where the pins went, but if the washers weren't packaged with the pins, I wouldn't have found them.

I'll put a couple of 6mm washers in that baggie to remind me to install them when I put the car back together in the spring.

My 330 has a bolt and domed locknut - It is original enough to think that was how that car was made. The finish on the strap is ?.
It is just a dull gray. Could be either zinc or cad originally. In the many thousand Antique Ford Bolts/nuts I have seen, they both weather to about the same look.
