valve stem sleeves/nuts

Post by cory »

After reading Tom's post on his restoration diary from 1-12-14 I have decided to have these items made. I have a close friend that is a machinist and he has a agreed to make me these. The cost of the die from e-taps is $75.00. I will buy the tap and am offering this service out to anyone who would also like the nut and sleeve made. We will make the nuts out of stainless and sleeve out of aluminum at first. We will leave the sleeve a few MM long to be able to finish to the desired length and leave room for any mistakes. We will see how they turn out. Fitting/trimming/and finishing to the desired sheen on the sleeve will be left up to the purchaser. If anybody is interested in these I will have the machinist make a run and when one buys a set I will let you use the die. I would just ask that the die be returned. The more interest the cheaper the cost to all. Start at a set of four $100.00???? If there is any interest let me know. I can post some pictures of the first run to be finished if necessary.

Hi Cory,

Looks great, but can I nitpick? The shoulder of the sleeve should have a softer edge than the sharp line you have. I believe the original pieces were stamped steel pieces, and the die they used left a rounded profile on the piece. It looks like you had your pieces turned on a lathe from aluminum stock and then polished? You can easily soften that hard edge and re-polish...or leave it alone, and only a handful of pedantic people will care!

Great job.

very cool, what a contribution. I always thought this hardware would remain unobtanium.
