Snaps on Grill

I'm getting my 365GT ready for paint, and in the process we removed the grill to be refinished. The underside of the top of the frame had about 6-7 old snaps on it, spaced across the length-- any thought what these would have been for?

Supposedly the car was sold new in Denver, so I'm wondering if it was some sort of radiator baffle? The guy doing the work thinks it was some sort of bra?

I have not seen snaps installed on the grille frame on a 365..
