Which 250 Cab air cleaner nut?
Which air cleaner nut is correct for a 1961 PF Cab? I have seen both but more of the 3 prong thicker one in the second pic rather than the 2 prong in pic 1. Is there a 4,5, and 6 MM nut? Thanks.

The first pic show a car before 1959 see water bottle ( Boano Ellena , Carl spider, Europa etc).
Ho ever the" low "Fispa filtehousingr were seen at later 330GT 275GTB So thats not correct imo
the two ear nuts were used till around 1960.
so the lat pic suits your car.

I have the three-eared type on my (July 1959) PF coupe and have always wondered if they came with the car.

John: Go look at the R & T road test photo that has the water pipes. It should also show you the Air Cleaner Nuts

Re: Which 250 Cab air cleaner nut?
I found the road and track article on the PF Cab, its blurry but it looks like a 2 eared nut.
One Pic is from Antoine Prunet "Ferrari Legend, the Road Cars" looks like 2 eared.
I am confident the 3 eared nut is correct for the Lusso, but leaning towards the 2 eared for the PF Series II Cab and Coupe?

first pic shows an inside plug engine with first water bag 1958/59
second shows ALSO a inside plug engine with big bypass oil filter one distributor( Only serie one PF coupe and Ellena/Boano)
both pics shows a serie one PF coupe probably.
Serie TwoCab never ever were available with those items.
those pics in the article and book don´t have the right background and are used wrong.
John I parted out 1889GT untouched car, still have the carb air box clearly two ear nuts.
DWS is wrong this time( sorry): if he means three ears nut were available.
I owned 1913GT for 14 years also org. two ears nuts. both cars are older than your car.
but well whats agains to replace them by news ones ?
like so many things

P.S
will show some pics later with all those details maybe tomorrow.
I just open an DOCG Barollo 1994 (one of my second hobby´s)
Nice weekend
cheers.

Well need to correct again.
did not enlarge the first pic
this is clearly PF coupe 2 outside plug from late 1959 or 1960.
Sorry for the confusion.
I am so sorry.
that makes a bad name /attitude .
but can live with that.

Corneilus: No problem with your comments. I believe that 3-Eared nuts arrive during 250 production in the 3000 serial number range. I can get much more specific, but it would take a fair amount of research.
Re: Which 250 Cab air cleaner nut?
My 250 GTE (2281GT) also has had the 3-Eared-Nuts, and I don't know any Series 1 GTE without the 3-Eared-Nuts. Starting arround #2100.
I beleive, they came with the higher Air-Filter (vertical slots) with the "new" top of air filter housing, wich is no more flat (picture above).
The 2-Eared I've only seen on inside plug engines or early outside plug engines with the flat airfilter housing (horizontal slots) (around # 1300)

Re: Which 250 Cab air cleaner nut?
Markus caused me to do some brief research. Using Factory Yearbook photos and period road test photos, I believe a good basic rule is that cars through PF Coupes used two eared wing nuts, with three eared nuts beginning with the 250 GTE. 330 cars begin the use of the round knurled nuts. Not to say there may be exceptions to this, but this is what the photos support. Obviously, SWB's and California's have some transition point.

Re: Which 250 Cab air cleaner nut?
Thanks guys for all the help, One of the PF cab pictures I looked at was the "survivor" car with 5,200 KM #2441 at Mecum in Monterey from Mike Regalia. It has the 3 eared nuts. I think even the best make mistakes on some small details. My old survivor coupe #1977 had the 2 eared nut.

Sometimes I think we are all here looking for the" needle in the haystack" including me !
but otherwise we have nothing else to do …….
Esthetical spoken the three ear nut look more modern to me.
But are fragile and brake easily by over stressing.
thats probably the reason why the 250 Lusso - -for instance- use them only on the air box.
the battery is hold down by the "old two ear nuts"
Plaese no new discussion here .
otherwise crazy and sick ?
best

For what it's worth the GTE owner's manual shows the three eared nuts being used in all photos of the air cleaner.

Re: Which 250 Cab air cleaner nut?
Just to show how poor my memory is, Parker Hall called to remind me that I had researched this subject for him 30 years ago! My answer, at that time, was that the changes occurred with the introduction of the 128E engine at about #2100 or thereabouts.
