GTC Recall
GTC Recall
I thought I would post some pictures of what's involved with doing the GTC recall. I'm fortunate to have a very good friend who's a weld engineer and master TIG welder. This is the passenger side

Thanks Tom for sharing the photos. I'm always nice to see another GTC repaired and safe!
For those who don't know, here's the factory recall notice:

Re: GTC Recall
While on this subject, I wrote an article for The Prancing Horse in about 1975-76 on how to reinforce the upper rear shock mounts. They can have a similar problem.
Re: GTC Recall
Dyke, as I recall this type of problem was also noted on the rear shocks on the 275's. I think your article in the Prancing Horse also covered those.
Re: GTC Recall
Jim: I, personally, have not seen a rear upper shock mount failure on a 275, not to say that hasn't happened. However, you are correct in that the repair and reinforcement process is the same for both cars.
Re: GTC Recall
After reviewing my post above I would like to mention that the close fit up of the filler piece to the shock mount should probably only be used when using the TIG weld process, this is because the skilled operator will actually melt (fuse) the joint together with a deep enough molten puddle to achieve full penetration before adding filler metal, which is kept to a minimum because of the close fit of the parent material.
I may sound like I know what I'm talking about but it's all second hand from working with and watching weld experts for many years.
Another interesting observation was that the same day I did the recall work I needed a weld repair to the lower radiator support tube. My welder said the tube was made from a high alloy metal, this surprised me because I figured that only the main frame tubes were "Chrome Moly" The welder said the shock mount was probably a mild steel and certainly not made from high alloy.
