John,

The large round thing with the hoses on it is the thermal fast idle cam, it has a soring inside that is heated by enigne oil running. When the engine is cold the wheel holds the throttle shaft at a fast idle until the engine warms up. They used these on several US model cars from the late 60's through that 70's

The square box to the left is a micro switch that changes from the R1 points to the R2 points. Each distributor has two sets of operational points one slightly retarded from the other, another emissions control device. Allows the car to idle and start with the ignition retarded that as throttle increases have a better advance curve. When all the points, switches, ignition boxes bypass switches are hooked up its quite a bit of wireing connections and complexity. I guess they did what they had to do in order to make the emissions people happy but 40 years later the parts are old and can be a challenge to keep in all working as intended.

This car also has a pair of boxes on the firewall that switches between electronic ignition and straight points. Marelli installed an early version of a CD ignition system, but obviously felt they needed a "limp home" switch in case they failed, and they certainly did. This car is running on it's R2 points without the CD boxes with the retard circuit out of the loop. I'm going to figure out what the best way to use or not use the emission controls, but at least it still has all the original equipment, just not hooked up!

Thanks Zac, Thanks Tom. I'd love to see this operation up close. It has to be a challenge to keep this working as intended 40 years on.

Interesting that Ferrari went from a triple chain to double. It's a more powerful and torqueier engine. Hummm, did they run out of space or wanted to cut cost? Or, maybe the initial design was overkill.

John: The original design was overkill, and by going to a two row chain, they were able to reduce the length of the engine by at least 1/2 inch for future designs. Two row chains first appear during 330 GTC production. At the same time, they switched to American Reynolds chains.

Thanks Dyke. The mechanicals of the Ferrari car is as beautiful as its shape. Too bad they are hidden.
