4247 GT is heading for Monterey!

Post by Tom Wilson »

After a long, but occasionally restless sleep, 4247 GT has awakened and started primping for her coming out party at Concorso Italiano, August 15th in Monterey CA.

Suspension, Rear Axle and Transmission are done, chrome has been replated, and is going on the car, radiator replaced, the dashboard is being reupholstered and seats go out towards the end of the month. Hopefully we send it out in early May for the rest of the interior. Gauges, fuel sender, radio, brake booster, windshield wiper motor and other sundry items are in shops all over the country being rebuilt. I have a Stebro exhaust system that I bought a long time ago (interesting story) and it will go on when I finish the hangers. It will be a whirlwind six months, but Zac and I are committed to driving the heck out of "Roci" (or my Mistress, as my family affectionately refers to 4247 GT), during Concours Week.

The engine has been a challenge, but the end is in sight. At first I was excited to hear Craig Kinney say that the top end was one of the best he had ever seen. However, he then went on to talk about the block. Apparently leaving an alcohol based coolant in the engine for 20+ years is a bad idea. The welding alone took about 6 months. However, we were able to save the block for considerably less than Ferrari would have charged for a new one and probably ended up with a stronger block to boot. It is now ready for re-boring, then pistons and liners can be ordered and we are ready to assemble.

David Wheeler and I are organizing a GTE gathering at Concorso Italiano in August and I hope that a bunch of you can bring your cars to hang with us. It will be a great opportunity to meet your fellow Yangsters; one where you can triple your show going dollar by taking it to Tom Yang's GTE Party, Concorso Italiano and the FCA National Meet that starts the following Monday. Start your planning now as housing is tight in Monterey.

Wish me luck!

Way to go Tom! It looks MUCH more pulled together than when I saw it with you and Zac. Sorry I cannot make it's public debut.

Cheers,

Thanks Mike. If the GTE Brochure is any indication, then I would say that Enzo and Sergio agreed with you!

Zac and I spent most of Saturday moving parts from the storage locker to the shop and sorting them on a rack system next to the car. Now, the parts can go right from the rack onto the car and hopefully stay there, instead of being cleaned, painted, polished and plated before being put back into a box. Sorting and looking at parts seems to be a frequent part of the restoration process. I was very pleased to hear Zac say "Most of this looks ready to go". I was expecting "Holy #%&*, we have a lot of work to do!"

I spent a lot of time stripping Saran Wrap off the chrome, which was kind of like Christmas morning...

At the end of the day, we test assembled the grill just so we felt like we had moved forward.

I live about 80 miles from Zac's shop (DGR Performance, in Oceanside, CA), so I bring parts home to clean and finish. I also am in charge of sending parts out to be repaired and the purchase of new stuff. This keeps me busy between visits to the shop and allows Zac to focus on the big stuff, which I am incapable of doing anyway. I am having a blast doing my part of the project and it makes the car feel like it is really mine, not just something I purchased. I am learning a lot through this process and in the end, will have a much better feel for what is needed to keep my car running.

Tom,

The car looks great. Last time I was at Zac's, I think your 250 was either Silver or Primer. I really like white on 250GTE's and PF Coupe'. I really fits the car.

The Daytona is at paint. Hope its back next week so I can get all my stuff done, which is extensive.

The Fuel Sender just came back from the John Wolf Company in Ohio. These guys are not much on communication, but they do very nice work at reasonable prices. I think they forgot to add the "Ferrari Tax"! As you will see below, it was very grunged up and did not pivot, even after I soaked it and wire brushed what I could. it looks like all the pins were replaced, so it now moves very freely. Looks good too (too bad nobody will see it...)

What do you guys think of the float they used? I have not seen one like this before, but they say it is the way to go.

When I purchased 4247 GT it had an 8 Track Stereo with a 80's style manual antenna (and white shag carpet on the package deck, but that is another story..). While cleaning out the previous owner garage, I found the original Blaupunkt Frankfurt ATR, which was installed by the dealer, Hollywood Sport Cars. I have since had it refurbished and it sounds great. The guy even added a connection for my iPhone.

Anyway I have found 2 NOS speakers and a semi-automatic Hirshmann antenna which is proper for 1963. It is my understanding that the fully automatic antenna would come later. I like the idea of an electric antenna, but being semi-automatic, it would require a switch somewhere to make it go up and down. I am thinking of putting it in the the accessory port under the left side of the dash, as that would not require any new holes. Do any of you guys have semi-automatic antennas and if so, where are the switches?

Since I mentioned the accessory port, does anybody have or have seen the emergency light that goes in it?

Here are some pictures of the emergency light that was in the tool kit of 2259.

Someone just told me (I can't remember who) they found a light similar to this one on ebay. I think they were an accessory that you could buy from an autoparts store in Italy back in the day.

Does the plug actually fit the socket on the dash? It looks small. It is interesting that they put in a socket to accommodate something you would buy at the hardware store later. You would think such a light would come in the Tool Kit, but there is no mention of it in the manual. Another Ferrari mystery...

The plug fits the special socket under the dash, but not the cigarette lighter. I think it may have been another type of 12v outlet in Italy or Europe before the standard 12v plug we know today. Didn't we discuss this before? Anyone remember?
