scissor jack for 330GT

Post by 330 4HL »

Hi I'm looking for a usable scissor jack for 330GT 2+2.
At the moment I'm not really concerned about originality but more about functionality.
Is there another (more available) jack from another make such as Alfa or Fiat that will work with the jacking points on the 330?

thanks - rick

The original jack for the 330's is more of a "single post" jack than scissors. The arm on the jack inserts into the 2 jack holes in the rocker panel on each side. It's possible to buy Alfa jacks that are similar to the Ferrari jacks, but often the arm that inserts into the hole is different (usually a small square vs round on the Ferrari jack, so they wouldn't actually work very well and might damage the jack hole).

All this being said, not many people use the original jack holes as a jacking point, even if they have the original jack, out of concern that the support areas may not be as strong now that they are 50ish years old. I think most use a low profile floor jack. There are some threads on this forum discussing jacking point for floor jacks.

Most scissor jacks from the usual auto parts stores and Walmart are very useful to carry in case of a flat. Never, but never use the post jack from the tool roll to lift the car; that could cause damage to the car and probably to you too!

Even when new, the jack doesn't look all that stable to me (photo from 330 owner's manual):

Many times, the original jacks will put a dent in the side of the body. Don't ask me how I know this.

although I havent done it, a cheap way may be to use a 70s mercedes jack like the one attached. I never had a problem with them; smooth operating, sturdy, but you would use the original jack hole if you went this route. the long post always provided some security. the post on my 190SL jack is good circumference but not long enough as the 330 jack holes are a few cm inside the widest part of the body panel above so search for a later sedan one.

Rick,

I once heard (on this site?) that one should NOT use the jack holes to jack a 330 because of possible structural weakness.
So, I bought a small, light floor jack (NAPA BK7761004 which comes with a nifty carrying case) that can be put on a strong point (frame on the front, leaf spring mount in the rear) and jack the car with safety. I made a well-fitting hockey puck to prevent paint damage from the lifting stanchion of that jack. The NAPA jack is not tiny but takes up a minimal amount of space in the trunk or back seat footwell.

Having said that, BMW made several jacks very similar to the Ferrari OEM jack (see the black jack, below). Since selling Federico, I have a completely restored Dino Jack ($1500) which is not really appropriate for actual use, although mine would function perfectly, and the BMW jack below ($40 including shipping to the US), both left over from Federico’s restoration.

If you plan on using the 330’s jacking holes, be sure to inspect all the related structure to confirm your car frame’s ability to support the jacking process without damage. As in many cars, the 330’s rocker panel area is not the most corrosion-resistant part of the car.

The scissors jack sold by Walmart works perfectly, wont harm the car, fits nicely in either wells on the side of the trunk and costs about 18.00 The second best money you can spend on a vintage Ferrari! M
