You will need to disconnect the shifter coupling to slide the transmission back, so you will need to be in 2nd gear or else you will risk losing the shifter index inside the transmission.

yes yes to Tom's recommendation on the shifter - we did this, lost the indexing and had to work thru by feel to get it back!!!

Well done Steve. Be sure to take many detailed pictures before you start cleaning so you can review later to make sure of where all the leaks are.

Ha! Ha! I spend my days working in an environment about equal to that of the mouth, but on the day the engine came out, I was wearing exam gloves....new, even!

OK, tho' the welds weren't ground to perfection, nor the plates made to look spiffy, here' s my engine on a stand that my friend and professional mechanic loaned me. (was stout enough for a Caddy Northstar and an Olds 455). The straps are there, at least for the moment, "just in case"! As I said somewhere, (maybe on this thread) I feel like "Hazel" cleaning all of these parts! s
