New member with 365 gt 2+2
Hello,
I'm new on the forum and happy owner of a 365 GT 2+2. I've started a motor restoration with a professional, here in France but I have a a lot of questions about another points.
I won't be too long on this first message and my first question is about the rear tailight (chrome housing). As you can see on the picture below, mine is not very nice. Up and down parts are black painted(or maybe some cars has this option ?) and I would like to renovate it (clean and rechrome for example). Do you have any tips or professionnals to do it ?

my friend had MPI i think do the "bead blasted look"[attachment=0]Image 3.jpgchroming strips ( which are painted black on yours)--- its a subtle effect and difficult to do correctly, and he had one vendor do a poor job initially.

In effect Michaël, there is a "bead blasted look" and it's not simply polish chrome. However I've seen a lot of restorations where it's chrome polish.
I think i can remove the black paint but the chrome won't be very nice after.
Strange thing too, the rear light on your picture are not on the same order than mine

Re: New member with 365 gt 2+2
rod, in the past I think it was just easier to rechrome them, and leave the entire piece as chrome, and in fact, when My friends 365 was restored in South Africa thats what they did. but I am pretty sure the correct is this bead blasted look. I own a 330 GT so I am not 100% sure but when I helped my friend with his car, my recollection is the concours correct finish is the beadblasted look . Welcome to the forum

Re: New member with 365 gt 2+2
and in terms of the amber/ red order of the lights, wouldn't surprise me if different delivery continents had different regulations.. the DOT in USA in that era had many requirements to federalize cars ( side marker lights, etc). either that or someone just reversed a plastic lens during reassembly.... Im not sure. I like the look of the amber in the middle though.

Hi Rod,
Welcome aboard!
I think ( I could be wrong) the top and bottom parts of the light are painted a dull silver paint over the chrome plating.

Re: New member with 365 gt 2+2
thank you Tom and Michael,
I think you are right, the correct finish is like in the last picture posted by Michael. I will remove the black paint and we will see if it's correct
Another question about bumpers. Mine is not very beautiful and with some little impacts. I've seen a company who make new bumpers in stainless steel :
http://www.groupharrington.com/en/class ... rrari.html
is it good products ? did you tried ? or maybe do you have any advice about bumpers rechroming ? thanks

Re: New member with 365 gt 2+2
I have heard of a couple of companies making bumpers for Ferraris, but I have not seen how well they actually fit.
Plating bumpers is not cheap. $1000-$2000 USD is not unheard of and if there is damage or repairs, it will cost more. There is a lot of range in quality. If I were to show you what a high quality bumper should look like, you'll never look at a bumper the same way again, but that kind of quality costs money! If you are going to have a local plater do the bumper, ask for references, and look at examples of their work. Just remember, when was the last time a vendor told you they do OK or below average work? They all say do great work, so don't take their word for it, you be the judge.
Good luck!
Tom

Re: New member with 365 gt 2+2
Thank you for your pertinent advice Tom !
I bought the car at auction last autumn and I don't have much informations about it.
I would like to know if it's possible to know the original color of the car ? I registred on ferrari owner but there is not much information, except the ability to download the manual of the car.

rod,
Love the pics.. please keep them coming!
we have an awesome plater in the south, but $2000 isn't even close for premier quality work here! Tom must have better connections:)

I just recently replated a bunch of stuff on a 330GT 2+2, and I think the whole bill was around $8K. Bumpers, bumperettes, fuel filler door and badge, door handles, and some other misc things, so it adds up. A nice straight bumper can be $2K to re-chrome, but it adds up!
