GTE Headliners

Post by 2837GT »

At this years FOC UK concours I lost points for non original carpets and headliners. Carpets have been addressed in the 250 GTE Carpet kit thread.
So let's look up and consider head liners here.
The 2 lower pictures from 2837 GT show my lining, a beige felt like material constant with my interior beige leather and carpets.
The other picture is from 2713 GT showing a white synthetic headlining of a type so often seen on 60's and 70's cars.
I think neither are original but I could be mistaken.
So which is correct, or are both wrong ?

The headliner material is not perforated on a 250GTE. It's usually a creamy white vinyl with a very fine grain in the texture. I may have a sample if you need it. I believe Re-Originals has the right stuff, but make sure you know what you're ordering. Don't rely on them to tell you what to buy! They may have "The Right Stuff," but just might not send it to you if you don't know what to buy!

Here is 2457's (early Series-I car) and upon it's removal from the car as we were disassembling the car for restoration, I can guarantee it has never been touched and if it had, there was absolutely no evidence of it. It appeared to be 100% factory.

Hi John,

It's hard to tell, but what color is that headliner?

The perforations I'm talking about is the diamond shape perforations found on many German headliners in the pictures Graham sent.

Tom,

The headliner is pure black with any 'tint' of color in the photo itself having beeng due to the LED trouble light that I had used to illuminate the area when I took the photo.

Hi John,

I've seen this pattern for black headliners, but many headliners are beige, and have the grain pattern I described. I guess they used a different material when they wanted a black headliner.

I understand that a customer could get any modification that they were willing to pay for, but I have not seen anything but white as Tom Y describes on a GTE.

Interesting.

Well if this wasn't a factory headliner, it may have been done by Jacques Swaters of Garage Francorchamps upon it's initial sale to Mr. Mattan prior to him picking up the car on April 6th of 1961. 2457 left the factory as 'Blue Sera' (#MM16439) with a Tan (Naturale Connoly #3218) interior, however prior to taking possession of the car, Mr. Mattan had the car sprayed Pearl Silver and had the entire interior of the car dyed black ... however I had assumed that the black headliner was original equipment from the factory as it was certainly NOT an original cream/white colored one that was dyed black.

Thanks Tom(s) ... I'll have to do some more investigating.

p.s. Here is a photo of 6441's (1965 330GT 2+2) original headliner in cream/white as described.

Ok , well it seem my rather beautifully trimmed fabric headliner is not factory standard.
On the other hand it is far too nice to change.
2837 GT's concours career maybe at and end.
