Can one of you knowledgeable people help me decipher a Ferrari engine #?
On the passenger side housing are the following #'s 226/1016E On top of the bell housing are the following #'s 1816/62E
This is a four mount V-12 with 3 Webers.

Help with engine #
I'm not sure what the number on the passenger side is.
The 1816/62E is the numero interno (internal motor number). This is what Ferrari calls the engine serial number. Usually the chassis number is also stamped nearby.
When the block was cast and cleaned up, the numero interno number was stamped on it. This enabled tracking of the engine while it was assembled and tested.
Once the engine was selected to go into a specific car, the chassis number would be stamped on it.
Regards, Kerry
PS, what chassis number is this engine in?

The engine was in 6981. A four headlight 330. It was mated to a 5-speed with a date code 8/65 stamped on it. I'm pretty sure it is a 330 engine, but not original to this car. The numbers are confusing.
The number I provided 226/1016E is stamped where the chasis number is supposed to be stamped. I guess that 226 is the engine type. However, the reference book I have shows that to be a 275 engine.
Does anyone know if the internal motor number can be used to trace what car this engine was in?
Thanks again, Rad

Engine numbers
I think 1816/62E is the original numero interno indicating this is a 330 America engine (first 330 engines were included in 250-numbering system); my guess is this engine came from parted out 5079GT.
Would love to see the stamps to be sure, but I think somebody shaved the chassis number and copied the engine number from the original block for a reason or another. I would expect an engine number around #1040 for 6981, so 1016 is pretty close. Could very well be the correct number for original engine.
"226" beats me. It suggests a 275-engine but I don't know if 330-engines shared any parts with 275, which could also explain the number "226" being added. An original 275-engine should be stamped 1016/64, I think.
Best wishes, Kare

More on engine numbers...
As I said earlier only 330 America engines seem to appear in same numbering sequence as 250-engines (128E). So if you have a 4-litre engine with number #1816/62E, it is without a doubt a 330 America engine. Later 330 engines have a numbering sequence of their own staring from #2 and running in even numbers up to #3450 or so...
(BTW: 330-engine #1816 belong to 8741GT)
I have gathered some 330 America engine numbers and so far I have numbers #1722, #1798 (Tom's!), #1824 and #1826. Low numbers appear in early cars, which indicates that assembly line for cars was very likely waiting for engines being completed and not vice versa. I would expect #1816 come up close to 5083GT. Well, 5079GT is only one 330-chassis earlier (5081GT=Lusso) and it is known to be a "partial chassis only" with Betz & Peters in California. As I am not aware of another parted out car close to these chassis numbers, it is very tempting to think that the engine of this particular car has been sold off as a spare!
One might ask whether spotting Ferrari engines is a waist of time, but for some peculiar reason I find it interesting! Only I could find a way to get more engine numbers so I could add them into my system!

Case closed...?
I think I was able to solve this problem:
After receiving some digital photos over the engine stampings, I noticed that 226/1016E is actually 226/10163 with the last digit UPSIDE DOWN.
I think this is the 330-engine that was once installed in 275GTB/4 #10163. Someone - apparently trying to restamp - then misplaced one of the stamp dies. 330-engine was later removed from #10163 and replaced with a new engine of correct type.
I still think the numero interno 1816/E62 could very well belong to 5079GT. Will try to get this confirmed.
Any comments?
Best wishes, Kare
