A ridiculous detail...

Postby Tom Wilson » Mon May 28, 2018 8:02 pm

but it made me happy! As I am waiting for the engine block to get back (again) from Ed Pink's shop, my only excuse to go into the garage is to work on little details. First, I cleaned and polished the (original) License Plates.

It turns out that you can buy unused registration stickers on eBay, so I mounted one on a magnet.

I couldn't find a 1963 sticker, so I went with 1964. Looks good!

Touch up and add an original dealer frame and we are good to go!

Turns out that the reason I couldn't find a 1963 sticker is that it was the first year of this color scheme in California, so the year was stamped into the plate. I plan to use this one for shows, but put the magnetic sticker on from time to time just to see if anyone notices!

Glad to see someone else in the weeds on "ridiculous details"...you may be the only who knows or sees it, but it's pretty darned cool and a point of pride (as long as you don't divulge how long you spent on it!) s

Tom, any chance you can switch photos 04 & 06? It would make more sense...

Tom: Any chance you want to share the source for the restoration of the plate? I know that is has not survived 55 years in that condition. Bob

Actually, that is the original plate in all but the last photo. It was on the rear of the car and in great condition, it just needed to be polished. Needless to say, the one on the front of the car was trashed. I had it rebuilt and painted (last photo), but it was a while ago and I am not sure that guy is still in business. It is my understanding that it is no longer legal to repaint license plates in California, so it may be hard to get it done these days.
