365 GTC Campagnolo wheelpaint colour

Post by maarten2805 »

i am restoring my 365 GTC wheels and need the colournumber for my 14"Campagnlo's. On the forum i saw an answer beeing 1960 Chrysler silver. There supposed to be only 1 chrysler silver in 1960. i found a website with Chrysler info http://www.tpocr.com/chrybp.html i see 2 silver paints: Silverpine and Sheffield silver. Can anyone tell me which one it is?

Also interested in this - i assume the 330 GTC wheels are painted the same color?

2 yrs ago we did paint 5 wheels and i think we color matched it from the original wheels....not sure 100%
but i can go back and look at that. Maybe a good int code would be a better way to go.

Also - i do recall some discussion as to the sheen on the wheels - being we used a base clear, there was some opinion that
they were too much gloss - so take a look at that as well.

I am the original source for the Chrysler paint. We matched an original spare wheel in 1972. I must be feeling helpful today, and went to the shop and found the 1972 can of paint. Chrysler only has ONE silver in that era. Sheffield Silver is Code Duco 3074. In Lucite it is 3074L, and in Dulux, it is 181-15995. The mentioned Silver Pine GREEN is not silver.

yes very helpful as always......any thoughts on the sheen of the wheels -

I'm thinking that a satin sheen is what might be the right look.....

The Lucite lacquer results in a less shiny finish if you do not polish it to the last degree. The silver paints of that era were not highly metallic, so not so shiny.

Thanks everyone for your help, it's clear now which Chrysler colour it is.
i also received the next info:

For the Campagnolo wheels on my 330 GT, I used PPG Delstar, color DAR 32498, Marlin Silver Poly*. To that I added PPG Urethane Flattening Agent, DX 685, to make it a semi-gloss (per instructions on can).

This is information on Daytona (365 GTB) wheels:
Technical Information no. 182
Ref./Cromodora Magnesium Wheel Rims
When a respray of magnesium wheels is required, the products to be used are the following:
- Acrylic metallized paint - gray 2427078
(smalto metallizzato acrilico grigio ghisa 2427078)
[ed: literal translation is metallic cast iron gray acrylic enamel]
which can be ordered directly to:
- ITALVAR - Via Privata Bolla, 27 - Milano (Italy)
The paint should be applied with viscosity 37" (Ford type viscosity meter - orifice 3), and baked at 212°F (100°C) for 40 min. in the over or under stoving lamps.

Hi Maarten,

I would also consider baking the wheels BEFORE painting them. You want to drive out the moisture inside the matrix of the magnesium before you seal it with paint. I have seen wheels bubble up years later because of something trapped behind the paint, and I suspect it's water. Anything thing you can do before sealing this moisture inside the wheel can't hurt!
