161K KM, Sanden AC, grommets, update

Post by michaelbalk330 »

My 2nd York in 4 years failed when the shaft seal started leaking…. So decided to switch to Sanden. One of the benefits with Sanden is you can put any FRONT plate (the pulley section) to almost any compressor of different size and capacity, to any BACK plate (so you can have S/D ports in just about any location). And you can maximize the output to fit your needs because you can vary the compressor portion ( # pistons, size, etc). smoother and more efficient than York too. Because the former long term AZ owner Duffy had reconfigured the AC for the hot climate 40 years ago, and I am in Hotlanta, I wanted to keep his arrangement, and custom bracket, which has worked well. There are serious space limitations as well.

So I welded up a new bracket to mount the Sanden (the commercially available ones didn’t fit) to Duffy's old one, using angle iron and 1/8”steel. I welded bolts to the bracket also, so now its easy to mount and adjust the compressor to tighten the belts. This bracket mounts to the sanden and then to the old York bracket. See pics.

It took a month of weekends to get it all done, and I used the time to R/R the hood, redo the hinges, pull the radiator and fix a small leak and repaint it, and replace spark plug wires with 7mm solid core black wires (Packard 440), and put in new plugs for annual maintenance, and respray the spark plug wire tube, and install Grommets that Tom Y got me…. (THANKS Tom!). Finished everything at 11AM today and went for a 1 hour drive in 90 degree heat, turned 161000 KM, and engine stayed cool… not a leak in sight.. super happy!

I will post pics later- for some reason I am getting an error message "Error parsing server response" when I add photos.

Nice post Michael. It is great when it all works out and you can really enjoy those drives. But even when these cars are a PITA at times I find the ownership experience is still fun unto itself. Mike

having just put a new York (or is that New York?) compressor in my GTC, I much admire your efforts and the move to a better comprssor (in every way). Might need your help should this one fail in the future, so save you work! Well done, indeed. s
