250 Gte rear leave springs

Post by chris »

Hi Tom,

just read your thread on the rear leave installment. Did this in mine some months ago. It is a real hassle. At the moment mine sits a little bit higher on the right side than on the left. I had the leave springs itself overhauled by specialists. One leave was broken and they did both including retempering to get the right tension.
I at the moment:
a.) do not have engine and gearbox instaled yet
b.) not have tightend all nuts up yet

Tom, you say the white car you have done (is it the one of Tom W.?) needs to settle.
Whats your experience there. Did you ever experience unequal right heights and did it level out after adding weight (transmission) and driving?

Thanks
Christopher

Hi Christopher,

I did not install the rear suspension on Tom W. White car, but am currently working on a blue GTE.

I've heard cars that sit differently from side to side, but I don't know if that will change when the car settles. In my experience, the first time a suspension is installed when the springs have been given time to relax, the ride height is usually high and there is very little movement in the rear axle. With a full tank of fuel, and some driving, this will settle the rear suspension down in time. Once the car is settled down, I tighten the locating arms. Another factor is I've seen people install the wrong bushings in the spring eyes, replacing original bushings that slide in the spring eye with silent block solid rubber bushings. If the silent block bushing is tightened down, it will not allow the spring eye to pivot the same way as the original bushing. This may also affect how the spring settles down.

Currently, the blue car sits a little high and is resting on the limiting cables, but there is no weight on the back of the car. I'm hoping with time, things will settle.

Good luck.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the answer. I will wait till powertrain is in car and I have driven the first miles to see how the springs will settle with more weight on the springs.

Thanks
Christopher
