GTE Fuel Filler Flap

Post by 2837GT »

Hi All,
I have occasionally discussed with Tom the rubber flat that folds out from a GTE's fuel filler.
I don't have one.
They were connected to the body work by a metal strip.
There were mounting holes in the bodywork for the screws.
See David Wheeler's picture below of 2713 (top picture).
My car, 2837 GT has no such holes (bottom 2 pictures).
The GTE manual shows no rubber flap present (see page 3)
So, my first question is did all GTE's feature the flap or was it only later ones?
David's car has an lower s/n than mine but was used the factory as an S3 prototype, when the flap could have been added.
Or, did all GTE's have the rubber flap meaning mine was lost and the holes filled on restoration in the 80's?
If they all had the flap I will look at a way of replicating it, if not I will happily not bother 8)

My 330 America has one and I believe it's original.

4247 GT had one, though it was hard as a rock when I got it, so it has been replaced, It is nice because it prevents the gas nozzle from damaging the fender.

That would be interesting, thanks in advance Chris.
I would be very interested if any owners of earlier cars could say if their car has either a flap, or the mounting holes.
Petrol nozzles in the U.K. are designed in such a way that they have to be inverted to fuel a GTE. The nozzle is then clear of the bodywork, so the flap has no function.
However, if it was originally fitted, it would still be nice to have one.

Hello, see pictures attached - this is what it looks like at #3631. The buffers for the painted metal flap look different to mine.

Best regards, Martin

As stated befor in out whats app group:

1. Picture in 250 Gte Owners manual of man tanking GTE does not show rubber flap. You need magnifying glasses ;-)
I guess they were added at a later date?!

2. I have seen round and square ones on cars. Always with metal strip and two screws. Strip painted black semi gloss. You will have the holder under the flap with holes for the strip as well as holes for the tiny rubber taps.

3. There is Picture in Davids (must have) book on page 144. It looks perfect but I do not believe it to be original.

4. Picture of TY in newsletter mentioned by David. See above post by David. Rounded edges.

I personally believe the rubber on S3 was square with a fine lined texture. But I am happy to be proved wrong.

All the best

Series II #3779 had it. The flap turned brittle and tore off at some point, but the bracket and a small section of the rubber are still there. I intend to replace soon.
