Vintage style battery
I am replacing the interstate battery on a 275gtb. I saw a 275 with an old style battery at last years Monterey show and have been looking for a company that makes them.I found one in Ohio, Antiqueautobattery.com.They produce maint. free 60's style repros that looks great.I also found correct stickers from Parker Hall(601)638-7856.He also has some interesting parts. Has anyone used this battery company or can recommend others.They charge about 250 inc shipping. Any input would help.Thank you

Ed: In looking at old photos and speaking to others, I am told that the Group 27 battery is what was used in the 60's. Four brands were used. Magneti/Marelli,Baroclem,SAFA, and Flamm.Stickers are easy to get from Parker Hall. www:antiquebattery.com has a good web site.They can supply a battery with all the nice red/black caps,and a blank front with an area for the repro sticker.Its funny that something as simple as a battery can open up a can of worms, but for a few extra bucks these batteries look great.I cant wait to get rid of that ugly interstate one that does not fit the car. I am told that if a car is entered for scoring in a FCA event the battery is not considered, but these look real neat.enio45 wrote:Matt - are there any pictures of the original batteries?

Ed: I think the only way to know what battery was put in your car when new is to look at old photos and ask other Ferrari historians. If you are lucky to have a build sheet(available for only one thousand dollars from ferrari)I am sure it will say. I spotted some Batteries that have
the distinctive 'Vintage' look
not concourso, but would look
oh so much better under the Vintage Hood
than a modern 'maintainance free' Battery
I did not need one at the time,
but made a mental note
for future reference
these are the Truck / Commercial Vechicle line of Batteries
these feature real screw on caps for the fillers, etc
and the way the case is molded has a distinctly vintage look
with a 'no-nonsense' style
I would be more comfortable with one of these
as the 'repro' Batteries have gotten a bad rep-
(at least among collectors that actually DRIVE their cars)
they do not last nearly as long
or perform nearly as good
as a modern Battery
(just like old time Batteries used to)
this is not based on actual experience
(I use a Die Hard Gold and put up with the appearance)
but from first hand accounts from Vintage Car owners
(such as Cadillac)
who have tried repro Batteries
and will never use them again
for reasons stated previously

(glad to know some one is paying attention)
I was wondering about availability
when I posted this
and how to get the yahoo at Sears
to acknowledge thier existance
as they are driven by Year, Make, Model
I do not know of thier listings include a pic
may just be specs (CCA, Dimensions, etc)

that is loaded with accessories

so a bigger Store may be of use
that, and getting the 'old timer'
to help you find them
instead of the 'kid'
maybe they will let you into the warehouse
to wander around and look at all the batteries
as I stated the Batteries I liked
were from their 'commercial' line
so maybe telling them
to look up Batteries
for Dump Trucks, or Heavy Equipment
may be of use
(altho most equip is 6V not 12)
I will look on the Sears site
and see what I can come up with

Fest, I don't know quite what you do to get so many short lines when you post replies.
Perhaps you type the Enter key when you get close to the end of the reply window. However, please just type. The words will wrap automatically at the right edge. Then use the Enter key only at the end of a paragraph.
That way, your paragraphs will wrap correctly depending on the user's window size and I'll be able to read your replies without having to scroll up and down.

I have developed this 'style'
so that the lines will FIT
and so you dont have to scroll back and forth
to read long lines of text
which I find rather annoying
(having to scroll back and forth I mean)
also
when using this style for an email
(for example)
when the email is printed
the lines will stay in place
as opposed to doing
this
especially when your original email
is buried within 3 replies
with an indent each time
and it ends up looking like this

Parker Hall recommends Ed at Gurdjian Battery Co (814-438-2048,
egmax@netzero.net). I spoke with Ed at length and purchased a battery for the 250 ($170. +
shipping). Ed has lots of information on the method to charge these
batteries. I also added a Baroclem sticker from Parker. Always check for fit before
adding acid. My battery is about 1/2 too tall and hits a frame member above.
So the Diehard will have to do for now.

use. The Ferrari club indicates that Baroclem's were used in earlier cars.

Well, I ended up purchasing a battery from sears. A g27 international. It fits great and looks pretty good after removing all the stickers. The battery that got me started on searching for a repro was one I saw at last years Monterey show. It was a yellow 275 gtb restored by Norbert Hofer. This engine bay was beautiful complete with the old style battery,6 red caps,etc..I sent a photo of this battery to antiquebattery.com and they have it. I might get one when the rest of the engine bay gets sorted out. On to more important restoration issues.......thanks everyone for your input!.... matt
