ORIGINAL LICENSE PLATE FRAMES

Post by Leo »

i have come across a few NOS license plate frames for
330GT 2+2. both euro and US styles. The front USA
frame is actually for 250PF soupes thru 330GT, and the
rear Euro frame is also for the PF and GTE cars. you can
see these frames on page 50 of the parts book. here are
the part numbers
front Euro: 242 74 010 08
front USA: 239 74 039 02
rear euro: 241 74 510 02
rear USA 242 74 530 02

the rear USA frame is curved on all four sides for a tight
flush fit against the rear body...very nice.

i only have a few.
you can contact me at
p.leo.mindspring.com

hope this helps some of you!

Hi Leo,

I think earthlink bounced my email to you. Anyway, do you still have a rear 330 GT 2+2 US plate frame, and if so, how much are you asking?

Thanks,
Jon

Posting this in an old thread because it contains the part numbers for the original frame. I bought what I thought was a US original rear license plate mount (rear USA 242 74 530 02). Photos are below. It's supposed to be 242 74 530 02, but I thought the frame would have much more of a curve to it, but the curve is very subtle -- almost undetectable. Can anybody confirm this is the right frame?

It's the right frame. The US rear frames for the 330 GT don't conform to the body profile. Instead, they used standoffs.

Thanks Kerry. I have the frame only, so I guess I'm missing the key part for fitting to the body. What do the standoffs look like, are they something like 4 rubber spacers that go behind the mounting screws?

Give me a couple of days. If I remember, I bought the stand-offs when I got my frame, but never used them as new holes would have been needed in the body. That would have left my old holes, so put off using the stand-offs until I was ready to redo the paint.

I'll find them and post a picture. If I remember, they were rubber, designed to have long screws go through the frame, stand-off and body with a washer and nut inside the trunk.

Here's what is in the body parts book:

As you can see, the stand-offs are different lengths to allow for the body shape. The lower ones are specific to the 330 model (242...) while the upper ones are the same as used on the GTE (241...). The Europe frame (also same as GTE) must fit tight against the body as there is a plastic trim surround while the US one doesn't have it.

Thanks Kerry, this helps a lot. It looks like it's not difficult to create the standouts from rubber and it's good to hear that the plastic backing is for Europe only (I wouldn't have noticed that without you pointing it out). I'm not too enthusiastic about drilling, but happy to have found the proper frame.

I was looking at some old magazine photos and came across these two.

The pictures are from Sports Car Graphic, Jan 1967. The car in question is probably a new one at Harrah's (MCM) in Reno since it has a Nevada dealer plate. As you can see, there is no plastic surround, nor do the standoffs make the plate vertical to the ground. From the other pictures, it is a early series 2, with the /65 transmission and heater valve in the front of the engine. This puts it before 8281 and fits with the publication date. Presumably the copy had to be ready a couple of months before, so the car would have to be made in the summer of '66 in order to be in Nevada by fall '66 for the road test.

Only fore information.
The licenceplate below has had a hard life,
But was beautifully intergrated on the trunk of an parted out GTE.
well it was disingned in Italy, not in the US
it has even intergrated fingergrips on the bottom to open the trunk.
5 studs fixation. no rubbers at all.

Thanks Kerry, this is consistent with what I was told that it will mount flush with the body. I think the "time capsule" 5k mile 330 GT series 1 that RPM had has this frame mounted -- which I looked at it closer -- I vaguely recall it being flush but didn't snap any photos.
