Build Sheets, Heritage Certificate--Has Anybody Done It?

This attitude of the factory stinks.

When these cars were relatively new, they were not collectible, nor did they retain great value. Thus, cars crashed, were misused, and unused, resulting in repairs, replacements and swaps. Back then, it was no big deal to exchange engines or transaxales to rebuild/repair a car.

Now, the factory won't issue a build sheet for an obvious real car (viz., chassis # correct) is patently abusive. Why should an owner, whose car at some time needed a replacement engine or transaxle, for, say the original blew up, or for whatever reason, not be able to obtain the build sheets?

To the Ferrari factory: ratchet down the elitism.

I do sympathize with your plight
BUT
I think the Factory is doing what they think is best-
to hinder the efforts of Counterfitters
(but in the same token, hindering the efforts of honste folk)

I guess it is the same as with many other aspects of modern life:
the few 'bad apples' have spoiled it for the rest of us

I recently obtained Heritage certificates for my 246GTS and 365gt4bb. I found Ferrari were very efficient and provided the certificates within 48hrs

I just tried to help a friend get build sheets for his 330 GT. There's no longer a link in the Ferrari Owner's Site. I inquired and got this reply:

Dear Mr. Chesbro,

Thank you for contacting us.

We regret to inform you that build sheets are no longer available via the website ww.owners.ferrari.com. This is due to an increase in data and privacy protection: build sheets contain sensitive information through which it would be possible to rebuild a vehicle.

In order to promote and protect the authenticity of its vehicles, Ferrari has created the "Ferrari Classiche" service: this department verifies the conformity of the vehicles and issues exclusively certifications for original vehicles. This service has been created to offer to vintage car owners and purchasers the possibility of verifying the authenticity of their vehicles.

As regards your request, we kindly suggest you to enter the "Classiche" section of the site, go to "Ferrari Classiche" and click on "Car Certification". This car certificate has substituted the build sheet. On the right-hand corner of the page you will be able to download the application form in PDF version, which we kindly ask you to fill in with required data. We will find in the form itself all the information on how to submit your request which should be posted to the following address:

Note, the application fee for the "Car Certification" is 500 euros and involves transporting your car to wherever Ferrari wants to have it inspected. So this is not a reasonable choice for most of the members of this forum.

That's absolutely unbelieveble.

That doesn't sound like the Ferrari factory is at our complete disposal; it sounds as if the owners of original Ferraris are at theirs.

Does the Heritage Certificate still exist, or only the Car Certification program?

Please refer to my entry at the beginning of this string in 2002. I guess I have to say, "I told you so." My opinion is that the factory is there for the rich elitist only.

Doing a car from scratch would be pretty difficult with my buildsheets; they're about 50% illegible.

This "classiche" stuff is BS.

The heritage certificate program still exists. Same limitation, essentially carb cars through 1980 are eligible.

They have no classiche. What nonsense.

500 euros buys a lot of gas for me to drive my GTE versus reading about it.

It exists, but there's certainly no rush. I applied over a year ago for my 308 and four months ago for the GTE and haven't heard a peep. I followed up with the customer service on the site and heard nothing. I asked a different question and got a reply in one day. Go figure...

I would try again if I were you.

I will. BTW, did that car have a build sheet? I'm wondering if my delay is associated with the fact that my car doesn't have one.

About 2 years ago, I requested and got a build sheet from the Factory for my 1969 365 GT 2+2, after several weeks of email chases. When I finally got it, it was worthless. Four pages, poorly scanned, with all of the boilerplate illegible and most of the blanks not filled in. They were apparently scanned several years ago by someone who didn't look at or care about the results and then were probably destroyed to make file cabinet space. In August, I requested and quickly received a heritage certificate. I don't know what it's good for since it's only one page and says basically that the engine, chassis, trans and diff numbers that I gave them are the ones the car was built with. It also contained the name and codes of the original paint and leather color and the "official" date of build. Whoopee!!! Good luck getting one but don't stay awake nights if you don't.

Yes, this car did show a build sheet being available a year or so ago. As part of the 330 GT Registry, I went through the whole serial number list to determine which build sheets were available for 330 GTs back then.
