330 Imported to UK

Post by grahamdelooze »

Hi I am the new owner of GT 6159 that was advetised on E Bay a while back. Now imported to UK from USA.
Engine was rebuilt in 85',spoke to the engine builder.Only done 600 miles since and been stood still for last 15 years.
I changed the fluids set the timing cleaned the carbs and plugs got the electric fuel pump working, renewed some perished fuel hoses. put some redex oil petrol in it squirted it in the bores and carbs and fired it right up.oil pressure came up quickly and let it idle for a while engine sounds good. stopped it and checked for leaks, looked good so started again and let it run till it warmed up.
No brakes with very floppy pedal suspected stuck piston in master cylinder dismantled it and fitted new seals.Bled brakes checked wheels and went for a drive about 2 miles.
Car gets all its gears no knocks all lights work and stops ok dont know about overdrive as i dont know where the switch is.
It sounds loud some holes in the silencer and 2 rear resonators are corroded so off with both systems up to the headers.Fabricated 2 new lower silencer casings cut some sections of tube and welded them in, re rubbered the hanging brackets and re fit. tomorrow ill see if i can get 150 out of it.
only joking ill change the tyres first.

Hi Graham,

Welcome to the site!

If my memory serves correctly, your overdrive switch is the right stalk on the steering column.

Good luck.

Thanks Tom that did it.
wipers work but no washers because the bag is missing.looked up some prices on internet.Holy cow.
Fitted one from a fiat 126 which fits on the inner wing really well next to radiator. orriginality not a problem as I wont be at pebble beach concourse this year.
Mechanical fuel pump not working so rebuilt using a kit from Talacrest.

Hi.
Passed my MOT,which is road worthyness in UK a couple off weeks back. Then sent off for my UK registration (title) which came last week.Got some ally number plates stamped up and fitted so im fully road legal now.Did 50 miles or so this weekend. O/Drive works well thanks for the advice.Noticed the clutch slipping on gear change.ajusted the linkages a bit, they seem free. still slips so the box may need to come out.

Hi Graham

Congrats on the MOT, a nice Christmas present. Where abouts in the UK are you. I am just outside of London near St Albans and we have regular Ferrari meetings with the Hertfordshire Area Group of the FOC. Not too many old cars but a few (365GTB/4, 365BBs, 246, 400s etc).

Thanks lee might need it.

Simon Im in Burnley Lancs.25 miles north of Manchester so a bit too far to come for a club meet.

Done over 200 miles in it now, still taking it easy.Developed a bit of a stumble while accelerating. Right hand dizzy wasnt advancing so stripped it.wasnt particularily stiff but seems fine now.Think ill do the same to the other one.used about 1/2 pint of oil so far.

Brake failure. Pedal got worse and over a few applications went to the floor. Check fluid, non in front res. Investigation found fluid to be "pissing" out of front nearside caliper.Better do both caliper overhaul. Everywhere shut for holls. Bummer.

SimonC - Can you let me know next time you are meeting and perhaps I will join you. I live in Moscow but have a PF Coupe in the UK that I store in Herts. Photos of it are in the owners gallery section of Tom's website.

Dizzy advance siezed again

Post by grahamdelooze »

dizzy advance seized again but this time revealed all.first time it locked at 10' it was removed stripped cleaned re greased assembled and fitted and ran fine but I wasn't happy as I didn't really find anything untoward.it wasn't stiff or anything and it seemed free and clean.anyway I was out in it and felt the familiar lack of power with a stumbling and popping back.I knew what it was and checked again with the strobe.stuck at 10' again.so off with it and started to pull it apart.this time the mech advance part incorporating the lobes wouldn't turn on the shaft.I didn't have this problem last time.closer investigation revealed that a plunger in one of the bob weights had jammed.the plunger consists of a spring in a sleeve with a domed head pin through the middle.the domed head had a small worn flat on its head from contact with the body.this allows the end of the pin to move far enough out of the bob weight to become hitched on the shoulder of the counter bored hole.plunger is now solid and wont let the weights expand.I didn't find this the first time as the pin must have shaken loose and seemed to have a normal action.once found it was with some fiddling possible to recreate the problem on the bench.suitably modified reassembled and refitted works properly and now hopefully sorted.now done over 400 miles total and starting to use more revs.
