There isn't one place (except for Ferrari) that has all of that information.

For checking that the serial number matches the car type (Cal spyder, 250 GTE, etc.), Hilary Raab's green and red books (even and odd serial numbers respectively) are the place to go. These can be bought through VelocePress (http://www.velocepress.com). Hillary's books also generally have the destination (dealer or person ordering the car) and sometimes the options. These records seem to have come from the body maker (Pininfarina, Scageletti, etc.) However, cars have been known to have been delivered elsewhere as needed by Ferrari, evidently without the body maker having had their records updated.

For checking the internal motor number against the chassis, the only reference is the build sheet. Build sheets are available for certain cars through various Ferrari historians such as Gerald Roush. However, for the more mundane cars like the 2+2s, the source has to be the Ferrari Owners website (http://www.owners.ferrari.com). In order to get a build sheet (generally available for cars built before 1968), one must supply several pictures of serial numbers on the major mechanical parts of the car. Presumably you would have to own the car in order to get these pictures. That also requires that these parts are the original ones as delivered by Ferrari, else they won't provide the build sheet. So it's a catch 22, only if you have the original parts can you find out if they are original. However, they will tell you if one doesn't match, but not tell you what it should be.

The original colors can come from the body maker (http://www.pininfarina.it) or by getting a heritage certificate (carb cars only) from the owner's site. The process is similar to requesting a build sheet except that pictures are not necessary, just the numbers. However, by the time you get to where you can read the numbers, you can also take the pictures needed for the build sheet.

Depending on what model you are thinking of, there are a few possible ways to obtain further info.

Most historians will know if a suspect chassis has been around or if the original engine of a vintage car is known to have been removed at some point. Engine types are easy to check; etensive lists of engine type for each model are quite easy to locate. If you can share the model and s/n you are thinking of, I think I can start out by sharing what I know and maybe suggest where you might be able to look for further info!

Best wishes, Kare
