If by "smog converters" you mean the catalytic converters, removing them will reduce the amount of heat radiated from under the car and can be done with no harm.  Naturally, you should check to make sure that the car passes emissions testing for your area without the cats.  I've heard of cases where "test pipes" were fitted for everyday use and the cats reinstalled for the emissions test.
