Rust coatings

A word of caution about some of the specialized rust inhibiting chemicals.  A friend restored an Aston Martin DB4 and he used a rust inhibiting coating all over the chassis sheet metal after stripping the rust with plastic abrasive discs.  (I do not recall if the product was POR or not.)
When new metal was later welded in for repairs, this coating burned in the area of the weld.  The vapor that burned off was highly caustic.  The vapor cloud rusted everything in the small shop - tools, lathe, anything bare metal.  Call the manufacturer for limitations before using these magic coatings.  Chris

Hi Chris,

So far with all the heat applied to the various bolts around the rear axle, I haven't seen or smelled any caustic vapor from the POR-15 applied several months ago.

The parts I plan to coat are so thick that I could leave them bare and they probably never rust away, but it looks so much better having these areas painted black!
