No, mine are just stainless steel. The ceramic coating is not so popular here in the UK. I did put some heat reflective tape on the adjacent chassis tubes, starter solenoid and starter wiring (but this either doesn't work or is preventing the solenoid from cooling down quickly enough after a run - I won't be replacing this).

Hi Simon,

I still think your starter was ready to go anyway, so I wouldn't worry about the "heat soak" until you have problems after you rebuild the starter. The starter heat shield should be enough to keep things cool. "Fix what's broke!"

Oh yes. I agree the starter was on it's way out. It was giving problems about three years ago but they just went away. It might just give a few weeks of hassle and then be OK again but I don't trust it any more. Anyway now seems the time to change it.

For anyone interested, I took the starter out yesterday. It wasn't as difficult as I had expected. Removal was quite straight forward:
1) Remove battery for safety
2) Remove relevant air-filter
3) Remove exhaust manifolds from this side engine and from the rest of the exhaust on this side of the car
4) Undo wiring (three wires)
5) Undo easy to get at 19mm lower nut and washer
6) Undo slightly more difficult 17mm (yes 177mm) upper nut
7) Starter drops out underneath the car
The space around the upper nut is a bit tight and I had been warned I might need to make a special spanner but a standard spanner from a Mercedes tool kit fitted perfectly. This is a combination that is 19mm open ended at one end and a 17mm ring spanner at the other, and about 4 inches long.
Now all I have to do is to get it rebuilt and I can then see how difficult it is to refit.

Hi Simon,

I'm glad you made out O.K.!

Are you going to rebuild the starter yourself, or send it out?

I am buying a rebuilt reconditioned unit from a Ferrari specialist in the UK called Eurospares. They have a web site (http://www.eurospares.co.uk/)  but it is pretty awful. The cost is around £350 exchange, which means they have charged me an extra £100 until I return my old starter to them.

I called Ferrari UK and they could not help. They had no stock of either new or rebuilt and told me that they were trying to have some new ones made. I was told that a new solenoid is around £235 and a new pinion drive gear is around £75 so it doesn't make sense to even consider doing it myself.

Actually the 'new' starter has arrived as I was typing this. It looks fine and is the correct one so lets hope it all goes back together easily.
