RM London auction sales

Post by 330GT »

Sale prices keep going up.

330 America 5007 sold for £150.863 or about $314,086.
330 GT Series II 8175 sold for £72.638 or about $151,209.

For full results, see:
http://www.rmauctions.com/AuctionResult ... eCode=LF07

At these values along with the weak dollar, we'll be seeing cars going to Europe from the US.
Regards, Kerry

Whew, the weak dollar is killing us! At this rate every Ferrari auctioned in the US will wind up going abroad.

Note the prices fetched for the vintage Mercedes cars too. They were from the stable of F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Gives him a bit more spare change I guess...as if he didn't need it!

The interesting thing about this auction was not only that the four seaters sold so well but also that the production 2 seaters stayed within their normative prices. The 330GTC and the Daytona were both at normal and not exceptional rates, so it was not just a dollar to pound issue. Either the four seaters are getting (much) more highly valued, in the UK at least, or these were particularly great examples...even then...those are some high prices! Best, Yale

My thought is that the four seaters were always more highly regarded in the UK and the rest of Europe than here in America. The practicality of a four seater as a 'family' car has more of an appeal over there in my view. In Europe it is more of family outings and family get togethers versus here in America where there kids play soccer, Mom goes shopping and Dad changes the oil on the old station wagon on the weekends.

E-type Jaguars and Aston Martins were easily transformed into four seaters by design.

These market prices are as good as they are bad.

Finally!....the 2+2 Has its Day in the Sun

Post by 330 America »

Rudy - these increases in values have been long overdue for the 2+2's. You guys may recall that I was lementing on this forum in 2006 whether to "pull the trigger" at $425,000 to buy a 250 Lusso, when Lusso's were pushing $475,000 -- but alas, I couldn't bring myself to tie up that much cash in one car.

I think most of us guys who do not have a $20 million net worth (or more) have a comfort range of what we're willing to pay for a car. Let's say a guy has an upper limit comfort level of $200,000 for a vintage Ferrari (a lot of money for any other marque, but a Ferrari). You try to buy the BEST example that you can in that price range. What will $200K buy these days in a pre-1973 Ferrari? Not much.

So the 2+2's are becoming more fashionable (particularly the 250 GTE's, as they are arguable more sleek/sexy than the bigger 330's). The sheer size (land yacht) and lack of reliability in the 365's push them down on the list of desirable models. So that leaves 1960's era 2+2's, unless someone can find a 250PF or something that needs a lot of work.

So is a 250GTE worth over $200,000? Not if you could buy a Lusso at $300K or a 275GTB at $500K -- but those prices are long gone. So $200K (or more) for a 2+2 starts to look like a bargain when Dino's are pushing $100K.

I guess I'm damn glad I have sunk the cash into restoring 330 America (#5061) as she's done with metalwork at Symbolic Motorcars and goes for paint this month. The car (same color as the one that sold for over $300K at the RM Auction) should be on Texas roads by late Spring 2008 -- a full four years after I bought the car!!!

Rudy - thanks for the hyperlinks and updated market news.

Tom - Bruce Marquand (Symbolic) is supposed to be sending me a CD-R, or DVD-R with the entire catalog of photo's from their work.

As soon as I have it, I'll email a few along to Tom Y. to see if he wants to post any of them. I'll subsequently forward a few once the car comes out of the paint shop. My car's exterior color is identical to the car that sold at RM Auctions, except my leather color is not tan -- instead, its a blue color that is very similar to that found on the border of this forum website.
