Translucent Paint for Horns

Post by gsjohnson »

I believe I have found a very close match to the red translucent paint used by the factory on the horns. I bought two cans of Frost Red Tamiya translucent paint in a spray can on line for $11 ($16 with shipping) and thought, what the Hell, I give it a try. This paint is actually for the clear polycarbonate RC car bodies. It came out very close to the original. The only snag is when you are cleaning & preping the horns, any remaining stains or discoloration will show thru the paint and you begin to apply the paint too thick to hide the discoloration, losing the translucency. Still, they came out very nice. I have pics, but no way to host them for you guys to see. Can anyone help with this?

See the sticky thread on how to host pictures on free picture sites and reference them in a thread here:

You can experiment with a thin light gray primer coat or thin silver base coat on the trumpet first to even out the substrate for the transluscent paint. If you try silver, use a hobby silver with the least amount of metallic. See past threads on this topic for suggestions on Testor's hobby paints.

Well I'm not the brightest bulb in the hardware store, but I shine bright occasionally.
