Welding Ferrari Blocks

Post by wwwboard »

Posted by Ean McDowell

I am writing from Australia where old Ferraris are pretty rare. I have a 330 I have started restoring. The motor has thrown a rod in the past making a neat hole at the rear of the block and a crack in the bell housing. Finding another motor in Australia is not an option and welding is the only choice.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has welded a Ferrari block. The good news and the bad. Where do they distort and what can be done to limit the welding damage.

Regards and thanks,

Ean.

Ean, Dragon Precision Machining, no web-site, but can be reached at 719-683-2800, or fax at 719-683-2200. These folks are located in Colorado Springs, Co., and they have been very helpful to me over the phone in the past. They do a lot of alloy engine case repair on Harley's. It was after talking with them that I decided to buy a TIG machine, but I have not done a block repair yet.

Ean,  you might check locally there in Australia to see if there is anyone that specialises in repairing aircraft engine cases. They would be likely to have the experience and equipment to help you out.

Good luck.

I am positive that you will be able to find a restoration company in Australia that can weld the block for you, but if you can't I would contact 'Auto Restorations' in Christchurch, New Zealand. Sorry do not have any more contact details than that.

This company has restored many very rare Ferraris (and other makes, including an Aston Martin DB3 something race car), including the first Ferrari F1 car to win a GP (Gonzales 1950 at Silverstone) and also a sports car Ferrari that raced in the Pan America (cannot remember the type). This company does almost everything in house and if I remember rightly the Pan Amerca Ferrari won Pebble Beach concours.

Hi Ean,

Have you tried Howard Pigdon yet, he may know if there is a block down there you could buy. Otherwise contact Tom Shaunessy in San Deigo, his contact details are in the suppliers section. I think he has a 330 block at the moment. If he does, buy it and ship it. Marlog cargo in the USA has just shipped a bunch of Ferrari stuff to Brisbane for me and will do consolidated so it's less expensive.

Regards,

Andrew.
