My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
Hi Guys,
I read this site every day but havent had much to contribute in a while. MB, I am sorry you are selling your cars!
Since I bought my 1967 330 GT in 2004, Richard at Competizione and Sport has rebuilt almost every mechanical system that needed it. Cosmetically it is in good original shape and was repainted for the first time in 2004 keeping its original color and the seats re-dyed. Otherwise the car is original and I will keep it that way. No rust after very minor repairs. It is an ex-Prince Bernhard Ferrari
The engine has never been rebuilt (to my knowledge) and has had "issues". At this point, it will rarely blow white smoke (coolant), it smokes alot but only on startup, the valvetrain is noisey, has uneven but OK compression. There is recently been a valve tapping and there is ominous clacking sound above 4000 RPM. Richard says the valve adjuster is wearing down a valve stem and spark plugs are oily. While it really does run OK, we dont want to damage the block (matching #) or the heads. So... he is going to rebuild the motor. We are going to do a complete teardown and leave nothing unfixed. No expense spared. I will sent the car out to have the engine bay restored. My goal is that when the bonnet is lifted we will see the engine as it was when new.
I am a Heart "mechanic" and have little skill with car mechanics, but will be happy to share with you the progress as we go along.

I like the colour, very regal. Hope you get the old girl back on the road asap to once again enjoy the sound of a carby equiped V12 in full song. There is nothing sweeter. I am taking my old bus out this weekend with a bunch of "rubber band" cars and the sound of my 8 foot long cam CHAIN howling at red line compared to the modern scream of cam belts is no contest as far as I am concerned.

Another story to go with it, Connie Ryan was a good friend of the Prince and met him while researching "The Longest Day" in the late 1950s. Ryan's book "A Bridge Too Far" is set in the Netherlands and he spent much time there starting in 1967 gathering material, the car came back with him after one of those trips. The car was sold in 1970 after Ryan developed the cancer that ultimately took his life.

I spoke to a guy, Norman Drubner who was the purchaser in 1970. I know of Ryan's ownership, but do you have any other details? Did you know Ryan?

Sadly I didn't get a chance to meet Connie, but did meet his wife Katie once. Sadly, she passed in 1993. She wrote a book ("A Private Battle") on Connie's fight with prostate cancer (which my father also had) which was a mix of his journal and her's. It's a tough read, but you come away with a huge amount of respect for the man and also an appreciation for how far we've come in battling this disease over the past 35 years. I read a "Bridge Too Far" in 1974 when it was released and have re-read it many times since. It's a fantastic book and even more meaninful when you realize just how much of a race against time it was for it to be finished. Connie died shortly after it was released. Ryan's son Geoffrey lived in Los Angeles and you might try and track him down, he could have more info for you. The engine is out! And here we go with the "while your at it's" : Can you tell me what is the original factory correct exhaust system for a 1967 330 GT. Where can I find one and about how much $$. As I have correct ANSA exhaust tips, I assume it is an ANSA. Thanks!

I believe the original exhaust on your car is made by ANSA. They're still being made new, and fit fairly well. They're not cheap, and made out of mild steel which will rust out over time. Stainless steel reproductions are available for nearly the same price and are not supposed to rust out. Their sound is slightly different from ANSAs, but which one is better is subjective. I have recordings of three exhausts if you do a search for exhaust sounds in the lower left window of the tomyang.net restoration site.

We have also decided to cosmetically restore the undercarriage. Can anyone tell me if the car came from the factory with undercoating or was the underside left exposed?

Richard has been working on head removal. He says he has seen much more difficult cases. I am very impressed with his progress!!

Hi Dan,
With really stuck heads, slow is the way to go. Rushing the process will insure a catastrophe.
In answer to last question on undercoating. Most cars I see have some kind of spray undercoating in the wheel wells, and floorpans. The belly pans are usually semigloss black.
