Re: Oil Change
Question. Why does the drain plug have to be safety-wired on this car yet I have not seen it required on any others? Do all Ferraris of this vintage require it?

The horror! The horror! The horror and the shame of being docked one-half point by an FCA judge when he crawls under your car in a Walmart parking lot and realizes that you don't have your drain plug safety wired.

yeah, and don't forget the correct color of yellow for dabbing the drain plug. Tom Y, go ask Francois about the correct shade.

For those that don't know the story:

No, the safety wire is not needed, but is a nice touch.
Another point I just remembered on the oil change. I apologize for being elementary, but don't forget to put a spear of engine oil on the oil filter gasket before mounting. It prevents the filter from getting stuck to the filter stand.

Re: Oil Change
Thanks to my Dad we did put a smear of engine oil on the oil filter gasket! And now he is fixated on doing the safety wire on the plug....my Queen will have a safety wire if we can figure out how to do it. We noticed the hole on the plug and on the mount.
I put another 225 miles on the Queen today - down to Monterey and back on business. Oil level is spot-on after the drive BUT I did hear a high pitch 'whirring' sound that started about 75 miles into the drive today...I could really hear it when I got into the right lane of the freeway and listened to it resound off of the side of the freeway where there was a wall off the shoulder...It wasn't too loud, but it caught my attention. If I disengaged the clutch and got the car out of gear the noise stopped. It's a tough noise to describe. In any case it just all of a sudden went away. Sort of sounded metallic but maybe like a belt or a water pump going bad. Except that it completely went away when I depressed the clutch.
Whatever - it's gone now but anyone have any ideas. Hope it's not a sign of something ominous. As of now the car is running spectacularly.

Re: Oil Change
Hi Tom,
Could be the pilot bearing in the flywheel, or the throwout bearing on the clutch. It would have to get worse for your to worry about it.
You don't need safety wire pliers to do it, but your results will be more consistent. You can get some wire and try twisting them with a pair of pliers to mimic how it's pictured here on a transmission plug:

Re: Oil Change
The next time it happens, touch the brakes lightly and see if it goes away. If a brake is dragging slightly, it can make a sound like that and is most noticable next to a wall that reflects the sound. It might also only happen when going straight and go away once into a turn.365 GT 2+2 wrote:... I suspect that because we were all posting so fast, maybe you missed the safety wire link that I posted. It's great!365 GT 2+2 wrote: And now he is fixated on doing the safety wire on the plug....my Queen will have a safety wire if we can figure out how to do it. Re: Oil Change
Thanks very much everyone. Much appreciated - I'll take a shot when we're done and post it.
As for the 'whirring' noise - I am on the road for an extended period tomorrow so I'll try the suggestions to see what the reaction is - I think the idea of depressing the brakes is a good one.
Love this forum and appreciate the help everyone is providing.

Re: Oil Change
And the first time I changed my own oil, I discovered an even more important tech tip than the safety wire procedure that you need to know.
Your driveway will stay a LOT cleaner and the oil change will cost less overall if you re-install the drain plug BEFORE you start adding the new oil. (Fortunately, I discovered this tech tip after only about a half quart.)
