My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
Dan, in one of your posted photos, there is an object that could be the subject of another minutia thread like steering wheels and batteries. I'm surprised yours is still on your car. Most of them seemed to have been thrown away years ago. THIS IS A TEST. Is there anyone out there who does NOT know what the black cylindrical thing indicated by the arrow is ??????

Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
My car was extremely original and everything seems to still be there. For better or worse, not a whole lot was done in the past 40 years- at least we havent had to patch up bad prior work. The car still has its belly pan.

Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
One is too many. Although the part in the photo is pretty small. It looks like the one in my photo. Mine was lost in 1995 during an engine compartment repaint by a restorer. I recently bought the one in my photo from an FChatter who used to own a 365 GT 2+2. I need to restore it, including reheating it with a mandrel inside to get it back to its correct shape, then strip and repaint it.
I'm beginning to sound like the journalists on the 6 o'clock news who announce a story for 30 minutes before finally telling the story for 10 seconds.
It's the horn compressor cover (Pininfarina part no. 251.82.960.00 - Protezione per compressore trombe). That's the 365 GT 2+2 designation. I suspect that it's identical or similar on most of the 330s and maybe even the 250s. Does anyone else know the history of this part? Do the Concours judges know that it's supposed to exist?

Looks like an old paint can to me... Mine doesn't have a cover, though the horns may have been replaced at some time. I will check through some of the old magazine photos.

Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
Why did the compressor need a cover? Looks pretty sturdy to me. Were there heat issues?
Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
I suspect that it may have been more a noise issue. The noise from the horns would cover up compressor noise, except for the half-second before the horns get air pressure. It may also have been that Ferrari apparently didn't like seeing other companies' logos in his engine compartments, although admittedly there were Bonaldi stickers, Pirelli stickers, Fispa tags, Weber tags, Marelli stickers. SAFA stickers, FIAMM stickers, and Baroclem stickers there.Tom Wilson wrote:Why did the compressor need a cover? Looks pretty sturdy to me. Were there heat issues?
A heat shield like that would only slow down the radiant heat absorption, but I suspect that eventually the compressor would get just as hot as without it.
Who knows? Anyone?

I think the "Campbells Soup" logo gives this one away.

Tom thanks for the info on the compressor cover! Just shows you how original the car is-thanks
Kerry thanks for pointing out the battery brand. According to my build sheet:
"Batteria SAFA 6 SNS 5 74 Ah".
We are exchanging the Magnetti Marelli sticker to SAFA. Thanks all,
Dan

Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
Did you buy a pre-made repro hood pad or have you found the material to make your own? Do you have a closeup photo of the new stitched vinyl that you could post.DBR330GT wrote:The headers have been ceramic coated. We have the material to replace the hood pad.
My original hood pad is thin semi-gloss finish, smooth dark-silver or gray vinyl (absolutely no grain or texture), quilted to what looks like dense cotton batting like yours, and something like cheese-cloth but heavier, which is, in turn, glued to the hood (first photo). The 365 GT 2+2 hood pad had a rectangular pattern quilting (versus your diamond pattern). I am unable to find the correct vinyl (one that is the correct color and does not shrink with heat). The best I've found is a peel-and-stick vinyl in a graphics shop - the kind they print advertizing on to glue in a shop window. Unfortunately when I quilted it to some batting and slipped it under the hood pad retainer to do a road test, the heat made it shrink too much. A tiny bit would just have made the quilting tight, but this actually almost tore out the stitching (second photo before road test). There is no after-road-test photo.
I really would like to replace mine, but only with something that is "correct".

Re: My 330 GT Engine To Be Rebuilt
Richard has all the parts for the engine back and will begin putting the engine back together. The ANSA exhaust is on order and we are waiting for it. Stephen who is doing all the resto stuff sent some great pics.
PLEASE HELP: The battery and washer bag look great but I believe Kerry said the bag goes between the battery and fuse board. Can someone confirm this and POST a picture of what is correct.
