Dan: The car is coming together nicely! It appears you are going to rely on the Lucas fans to cool the engine. Once that motor is rebuilt it will crank out even more heat, most of the 330 mafia have long since given up on those 30 amp disasters and put pancake fans in. 275s 365s all can manage in all but the hottest days, the 330s are not so fortunate. Unless you are determined to try for the Lawn on Pebble I would strongly reconsider having the Price of Darkenss to stand between you and a cooked motor! M

We have already relocated the washer bag to the proper location between the battery and fuse box.

The two rad fans have been completely rebuilt and are as new BUT Richard is installing an auxillary fan which attatches to the front of the radiator and can be switched on when necessary.

Richard wrote today:

Hello Dan, here are some pics of the 330 engine progress/parts. I will be
painting the block, oil pan, cover in the AM and will send over more pics
after. We will begin install of all bearings, crankshaft, pistons/rods by
Wednesday, will let paint cure for 24 hrs, and move forward into cylinder
head install. I will keep you posted with photo's.

Best regards, Richard

Personally? I would disconnect the Lucas motors and plug the modern fan in that circuit. That way your cooling system is run automatically with the efficiency of a modern fan. I bet the amp draw of those two Lucas motors easily exceed 15-20 amps when new, without much benefit in cooling. Modern fans run at under 10 amps with much more CFM. I'm sure Richard has wired the modern fan on a separate circuit, because if you're running them together, it'll definitely pop a 25 amp fuse. If you're running all of them when it's really hot, even on separate circuits, you'll still be taxing your charging system.

Just my two cents.

Dan Needless to say I agree with Tom, the circuit will be really stressed with the two Lucas fans and your two pan cakes running, I spent hours and hours trying everything to get my Lucas fans to move more air, BuddyO even put 308QV blades on his Lucas fans and that only helped a tiny bit. The additional heat from a well running motor will simply overwhelm them, the good news is they won't occlude air flow if you mount them, Can not wait to see her done!M

I mounted a small puller fan on the lower left of the radiator where the water inlet is. See http://www.parrotbyte.com/kbc/ferrari/A ... mallAuxFan for details. Running it and the two Lucas fans doesn't cause any fuses to blow. Of course, at night, in traffic with the wipers and heater fans on, nothing is going to keep the battery from being run down. The original alternator just doesn't have enough amps to keep up.

The nice thing about this fan is that it is almost invisible, being buried and black against the black of the radiator.

I guess my experience was a little different than most. My car just had the two Lucas fans. It never had an overheating problem. The water temperature was always at the thermostat controlled temperature, even in stop and go rush hour traffic with ambient temperatures over 100 deg F. I do admit I did not have the AC on, it was not charged. Personally I think the 330 cooling system can be made to work. I believe a clean radiator core is critical and there are only two methods I believe work for that. One is to rod the radiator out, not many shops will do this anymore, and the other way is to have a new core installed.

Cheers Jim

Jim,

I have to agree with you. My 330 GT just has the two Lucas
fans and it can handle the heat here in California quite well.
I did rebuild the fans when I first got the car, though. I think
the whole trick is as you say, the rest of the cooling system
is in good order.

Dan, couple of items around the battery for u to consider....there is a flat panel that fits in the bottom of the battery tray and one side is reg metal painted and the other side has asbestos attached to it to keep the heat off the bottom of the battery coming from the exhaust.....does you car have the flat panel?

Also - where is your Windshield washer pump mounted? mine was below the battery mounted to the fendewell.......i have see other locations but was curious as to your location.

Related to the fans discussion, i installed a 2nd lucas fan as my car had one originally with NO ac. The wiring was already in the harness for the 2nd fan and all it needed was attached to the relay. Also to help the cooling - we recored the rad with (cannot remember fully) a new core with more cooling fins per inch......, new rad cap and overflow tank cap and no issues when we were running the car. I highly recommend the recoring for max water flow and efficiency.

Hi Ed,

I believe I do have the battery tray. I think that my washer pump is in the same location (not sure- I have to check). Thanks for the thoughts about cooling- I am going to Richard's shop (Competizione and Sports Cars) on friday and I will discuss with him.

Regards,

Dan

I went to Competizione and Sports Cars today. Richard and Fernando's place is very busy and it is impressive how much they have accomplished in only 2 years.

Michael Bayer and everyone- can you tell us what the radiator shield is made of- all the ones we saw at the shop are fiberglass. thank you Michael for loaning yours!

Richard and I spoke about the cooling fan issue. As he has done with many other cars, he is placing the auxillary fan on the radiator and then (as I understand it) run it to a completely SEPARATE cicuit and will have nothing connecting it to the Lucas system. I believe he is running the fuse and the on/off switch to an inconspicuous place under the dash. I live in the country and never get stuck in traffic (yeah) and I have never had cooling issues before. With the rebuilt Lucas system and a good radiator, we think I'll be ok and rarely if ever use the auxillary fan, but it will be there in case I do have problems. Also he, of course, is setting the timing etc correct to minimize extra heat with the new engine.

Phil Tegtmeier used the term "Deja Ferrari" to describe what we were doing with the 330- We get to buy the car all over again!

The bottom of the engine has been done and the heads are on. I got to turn the engine over with a wrench today!
