Front Rotors and Hubs

Post by enio45 »

As im working my way thru the front suspension, i would like some advise on what to do with the front rotors and hubs?

My plan is to replace the bearings and shave the rotors slightly. What do you all do with the edges , hubs and bolts?

Should i media clean the edges and the hub areas, replate the hubs??

Can they shave the rotors seperated from the hubs?

Thank you for the advise and guidance.

Hi Ed,

I washed mine in solvent, sand blasted them then had them shaved. I couldn't resist painting the naked metal, so I used the leftover paint from the fuel filter to cover the non-frictioned surfaces.

As for the hubs and the hardware, I understand they should be black oxide treated.

Impressive for sure.....!!

Couple of more questions if i may.....

1. If i take off the hubs, do the rotors need to be reinstalled on the same hub and the same orientation?
2. What balancing holes are we talking about?
3. Can any good brake shop do the rotor cutting once i take them off the hub, or should i bring the whole assembly in first to have them shaved?

Thanks again.....

When I had mine done by a machine shop that knows Ferraris, they want the whole rotor and hub together. They had a special tool to remove the locking rings that hold in the bearings and spacer. Got everything back with turned rotors and re-packed bearings. See http://www.parrotbyte.com/kbc/ferrari/FrontBrakes.htm for details.

Hi Cornelis, what are the "balancing holes"?

Ed, I am unable to understand what is to be gained by turning the units as hubs/disks alltogether. Swapping the disks (left to right)... who cares. Once you turn the disks it's all starting from anew anyway. The hubs, of course, are unique to each corner of the car.

John,

I would assume rotors would need to be balanced to
avoid vibrations at certain speeds, therefore
balancing holes to correct weight distribution?

Drilled on the very outer rim of the hub,
like on a flywheel.

Hubs and discs should always be turned as
a single unit, no mixing.

Hi John,
My first thought when I say the NICE gallery rotor foto, was that these were aftermarket, retro fitted discs,
I am only famaliair with pre 1962 cars ALL those I owned/own have those balancing holes!
So Ferrari tuned these rotor probebly only in the early diskbrake cars?
But I unsure
I will send you foto's on your privat mailaddresse
I am to stupid ??? to place them here, sorry
May be you can place them for meto lett Enio how they look like
Its always nice to see someting unknown.
thanks in advanve

Rudy ,you have the right nose,

Some rotors does have only a few holes 5-7, other have more than 40........
These looks like modern air vantilated disks, but are not.
So it must have something to do with balance.

Toyoto Corola gone ? its a pity.

very interesting debate - ill take a closer inspection on mine today looking for the balancing holes.

I dont have any need to seperate the rotors from the hubs except for the fact that im replating bolts and nuts and other front end parts...so the thought would be to replate the hubs. However, i can live with cleaning them up as is and turn the rotors etc.

More later after an inspection.

Thanks for all the input

The idea of balancing the disk and hub together is bunk, because there is no flywheel action there (like in a drum brake), the circumference is small and the mass (bearings and collar) is concentrated in the center.

Anyway, here are some picures from Cornelis showing the "balancing holes". Do you have these on your cars? Mine didn't.

I looked closely at my fronts and there are NO marks on them for balancing.

However on another topic, there was some scribe mark on the hub areas that said CMR 515 7154 (im going by memory on the numbers but the starting with 5 is correct and the 7 is correct as well. any idea what these mean?

both hubs had the same thing scribed in them :?:
