Power window
Power window
Hi - I've looked through some other postings about power windows, but wanted some advice. My passenger window doesn't move. When the switch is on (either direction), the motor runs, but the pulley/cables don't move. The cables all seem intact. So far it seems to be a gear issue - agreed? Is there an easy way to take things apart to get to the gears without the cables getting out of place?
Thanks,
David

Re: Power window
Just a shot in the dark here, but tho' a pain, wonder if pulling the motor to be sure that the "D" shaft hasn't gone south.
I swear these damn PWs are such junk that you'd love to put some GM stuff in there (even 60's PWs from GM were pretty damn awesome) ...if I were smart enough to fabricate this, that's what I'd be tempted to do....but I'm not. s

Re: Power window
Seems like it might be the "D-shaft." There is slippage between the wheel that winds the cables and the attached gear wheel - There's a shaft that runs through both, so seems it must be this shaft. I haven't been able to take this out/apart, yet, but if this is the problem, are there any replacements out there?

Re: Power window
See the early part of my post about PWs. There are some units out of old Fords that will work. Be sure you have the correct number of wires (e.g. my GTC has a 4 wire setup, but they're not all the same). Email me off line if you're unsuccessfull, but lot's of info in that early post (back in April). steve <scheherazade@swbell.net>

Re: Power window
It seems that my problem is the gear that is turned by the worm-gear coming off of the motor. This piece has a plastic gear, which is fine, and then a flat, round metal piece on the back side of it that is next to the spool that winds the cable. This flat, round metal piece looks like it is supposed to be solidly fixed to the plastic gear, but mine has torn free so is no longer fixed and doesn't turn when the motor turns the plastic gear. Does this make sense? (I tried to attach a pic, but I'm getting a message that the "board attachment quota has been reached.")
If anyone wants me to send them a picture of what I'm talking about, I can email it directly.
I'm wondering if I can just try to glue/epoxy this piece back together, as I assume I'd never be able to find a replacement anywhere.
Thanks,
David

Re: Power window
I doubt that a plastic/metal glue bond would hold. There's a lot of torque involved in raising the window. If there is enough room, perhaps some flat head screws countersunk on the plastic side and nuts on the metal side? Or tap the metal side, install the screws and then trim flush if space is an issue.zdr wrote:...I'm wondering if I can just try to glue/epoxy this piece back together, as I assume I'd never be able to find a replacement anywhere.

Every once in a while, a 330 GT window motor shows up on eBay. That's probably the only possible replacement.

Try it now.(I tried to attach a pic, but I'm getting a message that the "board attachment quota has been reached.")

Re: Power window
Yeah, I've been doubting the glue idea myself, may try and see if I can get some screws through it all.
Here's a picture.

Re: Power window
There is also a release mechanism that de-clutches the motor to allow a emergency crank to work. I've never looked into how that works, but that might be an issue if parts aren't linked up properly.

Re: Power window
Try making a metal insert and JB Weld it in place. Or fill the hole with JB Weld and file the hole to shape. The regular JB is a little stronger than the 4 min stuff. Be sure the surfaces are oil free. The JB stuff is metal filled and very strong so it can be threaded if needed.
Re: Power window
Thanks everyone - I ended up using JB Weld to put it back together and so far it's working. May get the one on eBay just in case.
