GTE engine bay drain tubes
GTE engine bay drain tubes
A stupid question but I have not been able to get a concise answer on this one. Anybody have pictures of what kind of tubing they used for the drain tube from the cowl at the back of the firewall. There seams to be a location where they had brackets attached to route the tubes down either side of the tunnel but I had nothing there and have looked at several cars with nothing there either.
Thanks for any help

Hi Zac,
We're assembling 2953 after paint, and I can see the drain tube in front of the fire wall, but I don't see a hose. I think I remember putting my 330 America together and it had the same steel tube, but no tube. Both of these cars had many hands in them, so who knows.

Re: GTE engine bay drain tubes
interestingly, I noticed the drain hoses in a friends series II cab. The drain hose is on the right side and loops around and is visiable just by the battery where it dumps water. I assume there is only one for the cowl.... are there two? When I get a chance I'll look at the left side. My car is also without this the drain hose.

Here's a picture of the hose on PF coupe 1747 (ex Ed Long car). As you can see, the hose looks to be cloth wrapped.
On my coupe, there are cowl drains on both sides and the same little clamps on each footwell.
I'm not wild about where the end is, dumping right onto the heat shield by a spark plug. I think that it should be longer and go down along the footwell. On my coupe, there are cowl drains on both sides and the same little clamps on each footwell.

Thanks guys just the input I needed, I went back and looked at my PF Cab II pictures and could see both hose on there. I agree with you Kerry, the hose looks like a larger version of the cloth wrapped heater hose.

Re: GTE engine bay drain tubes
Ok, pardon my confusion here... Are you talking about the drain tube from the water catch basin around the base of the windshield wipers on a GTE? If so, the Series III uses a 22 1/2 mm (od) rubber tube on the passengers side that goes behind the fuse panel and ends where the body opens up to the ground (or belly pan, if you have one). Misses all heat shields and spark plugs as far as I can see and is only on one side. I have one metal strap around the hose that screws into the body with a phillips head screw. Of course, if you are talking about something else, I withdraw my comments.
(By the way, if you want to be truely authentic, you can stick a blue pen into the tube to hold the two broken pieces together for the photo, like I did)

My GTE has blue-green plastic hose, but it may have been replaced in 1966 when the car was serviced at the factory.

The factory manual calls for a black pen to hold the
two broken tubes together. You may be losing points
on that restoration of yours.

Gee, thanks Rudy! Is that black anodized or powder coated?

Neither, it's painted a black matt finish to match the
radiator. Somewhat common knowledge.

Re: GTE engine bay drain tubes
I think it is time to end this diversion from the thread. Zac, which of the three hoses do you think are correct?
Re: GTE engine bay drain tubes
I found some hose at McMaster-Carr that is dead on match for the hoses I pulled off the pf cab. Part # 51225k45 Santoprene rubber tubing 5/8" ID, 7/8" OD, .125 wall. The stuff on our cab was smooth plain rubber but cloth wrapped hose is a possibility to, anybodys guess on this stuff.

Re: GTE engine bay drain tubes
my 330 original tubes are cloth wrapped - they were in nice shape and had the orig clamps securing the top of them to the cowl drain pipes. i can send pics if anyone needs them.
