Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Anybody have a source for fixing or replacing the fan clutch on the GTE? 4247 GT's engine is going back together and this issue needs to be addressed. A long time ago, someone on this site suggested a Peugeot 505 clutch, but I don't recall anyone actually trying it...
Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Hi Tom: I know Peugeot Patented the Clutch fan and used it in the 60's on the 403.

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Tom, when i hear fan clutch, my mind jumps immediately to Corvettes. I'll be there's someone who can repair this and I'd start with the
Corvetteforum.com and post in either the C1/C2 or the C3 section.
good luck. s

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Zac is sending me some photos and I will put them up. I did a search of the Corvette Forum and a couple of guys recommended Kirk Connell in Florida who sounds like the guy you are thinking of. I will be sending him the photos as well and will let you guys know what happens.
Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
The Peugeot clutch system is TOTALLY different from the Chevrolet fluid clutch system.

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
I have some photos of the rebuild of the fan clutch on my GTE 2853. It was OK electrically, but I replaced the bearings.
Unfortunately the photos are too large to attach on this forum

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Pardon my (again revealed) ignorance, but I thought that fan clutches were, by definition, not electric, but instead rely on changes in viscosity to either let the fan free wheel, or when hot, engage and drive the fan for better cooling. no? s

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
On American cars, the fan clutch was a temperature dependent coupling, not with the 250 Ferraris. They had a electromagnet that was energized by the temperature sender unit.Steve Meltzer wrote:Pardon my (again revealed) ignorance, but I thought that fan clutches were, by definition, not electric, but instead rely on changes in viscosity to either let the fan free wheel, or when hot, engage and drive the fan for better cooling. no? s

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Ok, here is what I have. The white part is ceramic which covers the magnet. I don't know if the cracks are ok or not. Note that some are straight like they were planned and others look like breaks. The other half appears to be missing its insert. I seem to recall that this one may have had asbestos in it, but am not sure where I got that. The magnet does work however.
Suggestions?

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
It looks like you have all the parts - they just need a good cleaning. I dont think the cracks mean anything since it looks solid otherwise.
Since the magnet works, that is the most important thing. Also the contact ring must be in good condition

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
It's usually the carbon brush or a dirty slip ring. Adjust the three screws for proper space and actuation.
Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
Hi Tom,
I think the cracks are fine. I see this a lot. Clean it all up, reassemble it, and make sure the brass ring that contacts the carbon brush is clean. That's where all the magic happens. Good luck!

Re: Replace/Fix GTE Fan Clutch
So there is no buffer between the ceramic on one side and and the metal on the other? It sounds noisy.
