365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Hi A.D. , if you dont have a pyrometer a drop of water on each header pipe might tell if one or more are not getting hot form not firing.Just a thought,Mike

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Could you give me some leads as to where i could buy a reconditioned rear caliper?
Many thanks

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
I believe the 365 2+2 brakes are Girling brand. 330 GTC is girling too, same as Jaguar XKE. I got all the parts I needed through a Jaguar supplier far cheaper than the Ferrari suppliers, even the handbrake parts are same as XKE. Of course I can't say for sure if it's the same situation for the 365, but it's a lead. You do know it is a common job to have a shop recondition calipers by sleeving?
Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Thank you.
To explain
Over the years at some point someone has fitted a caliper set on the rear right wheel which does not match the other three. The piston diameter required is 27 mm whereas the caliper set on this wheel has a larger dia. Hence am looking to change the caliper set for this wheel to match the others.
Will search for jaguar calipers as suggested but if you know of a supplier where i could buy a reconditioned caliper set it would be very useful.
Best

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
It will probably be easier to find a used set, then you send them out for the recon. Look in Hemmings or FCA, or FML there always seems to be someone advertising used parts.

An update
The distributor cap the wires the spark plugs have all been changed to new ones
Have been starting and have kept engine running all this time
The car is still running rich although a little less than earlier
Suspect its the valves in two cylinders that have not seated properly
Plan to keep the engine running as often as possible
While we wait for rear brake caliper to get sorted
Once that is done, will take it out on the road, and hope that by driving the car the valves will seat and seal properly
Have used 20 - 40 oil but on an engine masters video on you tube noticed that they used 10 - 40 oil to break in the engine.
Should we try using that oil?

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
The heavier weight oil is fine for your engine. What does the oil pressure read when the engine is hot? Let me know what the gauge says at idle and at about 2000-3000 rpm.
I don't thin the rich running has a lot to do with two valves not seating. Did you perform a leak down test on the suspect cylinder to determine which valve is leaking? How many turns of the air adjuster screws have you turned out from close on the carburetors? I'm sorry if I'm asking questions from before, but this thread is so long, I don't have the time go back and search!

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Hi Tom.
Haven’t done a leak down test yet as i have
Lost the leak down test gauge that i had got
From summit. Will order another one.
Regarding your other question
The throttle is open by 1.5 turns .
The air screw is turned out by half turn
from full close.
As always, thanks for all your help!

AD, I'm amazed how long you've stuck with this project. It seems like it's been two steps forward, and one step back for you! I really would love to see you get this car back on the road. I may have to offer to come out to India to take a look!A.D. wrote:Hi Tom.

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Hi Tom
Would love to see you in Bombay or Mumbai as it is called now.
However I would like to fetch you from the airport in the queen. Therefore have to get the car road worthy before we plan any trip.
You know, when i was in school I was in “Palmer” House. Our motto was “nil desperandum”. Never despair!
Although i do despair at times, I dont give up - i do believe that we are now very close to the end of this very very long project.
The brakes have been attended to, are being refitted as we speak and we plan to take the car on the road next week provided nothing else goes wrong.
Since the fuel rich smell has reduced while keeping the engine running on the same spot we feel that by driving it a bit it should reduce further.
As always will keep you posted!

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Thank you Mike and Happy Easter everyone.
So today, Easter 2018 the car went for its first short drive
In years.
Just a very short distance coz it was only a trial
And the brake pedal needs to be stood on to
Make the car stop.
Will be checking the brake booster during the coming week.
She starts and idles fine, but after a little while
As she warms up she misfires. Increasingly.
Suspecting the coils or the points. (The resistors spark plugs wires distributor caps rotors are all new)
Have sent Tom a video of the misfire which he could
PM to anyone who would like to see it.
So my friends philosophers and guides - any suggestions on how to address this misfire?

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Greetings ... Never been a fan of resistor spark plugs. I'd try some none resistor ones. Also, check the resistance of the ballast resistor both cold and hot as well as the coils. If you put in new condensers and still have the old ones, try a change there as well. Also, hopefully you are using metallic conductor spark plug wires. Check voltage at the coils when warm. Those are all things that can change with temperature. Personally , I'd check condensers first. Don't assume new parts are without fault. It seems more and more new parts fail quickly or are bad to start.

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Some more info:
All wires are getting a continous spark.
On cold start everything is fine .
After warm up , there is an intermittent misfire
mainly from first carb and a little from second .
Since it is not a continous misfire, the mechanic
feels that due to new valve guides ,they maybe “catching” the valves momentarily
and freeing up again thereafter.
He feels , upon usage , the guides will get free
and the Misfire will stop.
Any thoughts comments and suggestions?
