Reproducing Valce Stem Covers

Post by mechaniker »

Hello guys,
I know, Parker Hall sells them and I am sure, they are perfect, as I am happy with all the stuff I bought so far from him.

But I planned to let reproduce two different slotted machine head screws for different eras of Ferraris, I decided try it.

I started, when I was at a Classiche Workshop and saw a Pininfarine Coupe with the valve stem covers. As the tire tube was changed some time ago, they didn‘t fit nicely anymore. Luckily they lent me one cover and nut, so I was able to make some drawings. These I transferred into CAD parts and 3d printed some, till i was happy with the fitment and shape. These CAD parts I than gave the CNC guy, who produced me 4 sets of 5 pieces. As my plater is not able to do cadmium and lead plating, i decided to have a set nickle plated, as the screws. They turned out looking far better than i expected.

At the end, it was fun and interesting, what it takes to reproduce parts.

Best

Beautiful work! Do you know which models had these valve stem covers? Also, were they used only on Borranis or were they used with Campagnolo wheels also? Will you be selling the extra sets?

Thanks!

Tom has written one or two articles on this side about them. Will have a look later, if i can find them.

As far as I remember, all Pirelli delivered Ferraris had them including the 330s (not sure when it ended, maybe Tom can chime in). Over the Years, the plating changed. Also the Borranis changed around the Valve Stem. Some (early?) rims had just a hole, where the stem was put through. Here the Cover needs to be trimmed to follow the contour of the rim. Some rims (later ones?) have a recess around the stem hole. On this rims my covers just fit plug and play.

If they have been used on Campagnolos, i´m not sure.

Yes, I would sell extra sets.
