SI 330GT 2+2 cooling fan

Post by tyang »

Hi All,

I pulled the radiator out of a SI 330GT to have a new core installed, and found this fan installed on the electric motor in front of the radiator.

On SI 330s, there are usually two fans, one driven by an electromagnetic clutch by the engine, and a second pusher motor in front of the radiator. If my memory serves me correctly, this fan is supposed to be a magnesium or aluminum cast fan like we see on 330GTCs. I've never seen this stamped steel fan blade before. Before I remove it and find a cast alloy fan, I just wanted to make sure this isn't original. Can other guys with SI 330s confirm this fan blade is incorrect? This looks pretty homemade. Thanks.

My first reaction was that the blade would be best mounted on a lawn mower.

Yes, the blade should be a cast aluminum like these:

Hi Kerry,

My thoughts exactly!

The SI 330s only use one fan, as I think the picture you sent is a SII car. By then, they eliminated the engine driven fan and installed two electric fans.

Thanks.

Tom: Yes, it is the cast three blade fan. My 330 GT had the single pusher electric and it had the cast blade. Just be sure the fan turns the correct direction. I wondered why that car tended to run warm, and got down in front of the grille one day with the fan running to be hit in the face with a blast of hot air!

From my understanding on the series II cars, they came with one fan, lucas type motor with the 3 blade fan.

If you got A/C the second fan was added to the front and activated when the ac was turned on.

I also understand that these fan motors are similar to what the jag xke's used and the same motor of the wiper motor
system for the ferrari 330 GT/GTC etc. I was also cautioned that if you buy the motors on line make sure you tell them what
direction you want the motor to run - then it is wired internally to go the right way....jag pulls the air thru and ferrari pushes the air thru from the front.

If any of the is is incorrect - pls say so - we can correct this post so it does not mislead people in the future.

Greetings... Some time ago, Cory posted a picture of the one from Big Brother. It was a single motor with a 3 blade cast aluminum fan. Little brother (my car) has no fan but I suspect it should have one. There are holes in the square tube that suggest there had been one. That skinny little blade in Tom's picture looks like Jaguar XKE.

Yes, picture of a SII, but the best one I had handy to show the blades. Actually, only SII cars ordered with A/C came with 2 fans, however, due to the chronic overheating issues of the 330s, many cars had a second fan added along the way.

Note if you look carefully, the left motor is incorrect, bring round, probably from a 308.
