Yes it became too much to use, and though I put about 30,000 miles on it under my care, I paid for those miles! Perhaps more then $3 each one in maintenance costs. I like stories so here is one; I had bought a 1972 911T to drive while the 330 was often getting fixed. After awhile I found that un-involving so I found a 73 911 E on ebay and bought that. What a disaster this car turned out to be! I was totally burned, so I sold both of the 911's in disgust. Two years went buy and I saw a 1970 911S on the S Registry site and it turned out that was for sale, and I bought that. That car and owner were part of a community of Porsche folks that had used the Porsche book of factory go fast parts, originally made for the 911R race cars, to hot rod their cars. This group was called R Gruppe and was a thriving semi underground community of people who liked to drive. And I became part of that, eventually putting over 70,000 miles on the 911S in the last 7 years.
As for the 330 during this time, I had had Brian Vignale do an engine rebuild which took him three years! After getting the car back and driving it about 1000 miles a valve fell off and created havoc in my engine. Brian felt this could have been my fault and wouldn't warranty his work, so my three year engine odyssey got even worse. Tom and Francois kindly offered to step in to what was a difficult situation and rebuilt the engine again. At which point, as much as I loved the car, I thought enough, I don't want to worry about will something go wrong anymore.
This community around Tom is quite wonderful and the cars are special and unique. Maybe someday I'll get another, (though I think I'd prefer a GTC at this point). And I would have to hope the endless toil with my 330 would not be uniform across the marque, though one might assume it is. Driving these cars is fun, but I wonder if that is going to actually be what people really do with them over time. Or is my experience living in the heart of a city an unsurmountable issue. I remember Francois saying to me soon after I bought the car and was using it, "Who told you you could have a car like this in a city?!"
So that's my story.
By the way I do have some random parts like a new old stock hood pad?! a rebuilt starter motor, Chaney clamps, old, dirty, but unripped sun visors. That kind of thing, that I would collect in case I needed later. I guess I'll sell these on ebay unless someone here wants to make an offer on any of it.
And I still read Tom's monthly installments thought not this Board as much. My email is yale@luakabop.com
All the best,
