Toolkits

Post by jsa3 »

The 330 GT that I'm currently looking to buy has only the original jack and hub hammer-the rest of the original toolkit is missing. I looked at the website for a co. called Lyle Tanner enterprises and if I bought all the
reproduction tools from them needed to put together an accurate toolkit
it would cost well over $2000. I mean, $650 for a repro roll pouch?
$125.00 for a screwdriver? I am guessing I could buy the materials and have a local leather craftsman make up a pouch for $200 or so, and buy stuff that looked reasonably accurate and at least have a semblance of a kit. Anyway, any experience in reasonable toolkit replacement out there?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Yup, I know it's rediculous! Unfortunately the tool roll is made of a vinyl that is hard to reproduce. I'm sure you could do the research and make one yourself, but by the time you finished, it may be worth the expense of buying one!

The individual tools are expensive as well because they are supposedly exact copies of the originals. There are subtle diferences between, say the "beta" wrenches available today from Beta, compared to the originals or reproductions. Knowing exactly what is correct will help you get the right stuff.

I have confirmed the as much as $5-7K have been spent on complete and verified original Ferrari toolkits! My car did not come with it's tool kit, and I will probably never collect all the parts to make a complete kit. At those prices, it may not even be wise to leave it in the car or actually use them!

For about $200 bucks, I could put together a great and functional tool kit that I wouldn't worry about loosing. I'll let the Concours circut worry about the tool kits!

Thanks for replying. It's going to be a driver, unless values go thru the roof again, which I'm not even factoring into my purchase. I just want a Ferrari 330! I've found some 1950's stuff that looks okay - grease gun, filter wrench, screwdrivers, a few metric wrenches - in my inlaws' garage, and along with some metric stuff from my old BMW I ought to have a presentable and useable kit. I feel very lucky that the car (1964) has the original jack and hub hammer. I am going to continue to search for a reasonable facsimile of a pouch and will post info if I find anything.

I believe one of the great mysteries of vintage Ferraris, and one that the 'suppliers' take huge advantage of, is what the hell makes a 'correct' tool kit. I have looked closely at the toolkits of at least three allegedly original toolkits of 365GT2+2s, and the brands of the tools themselves have all been different (I don't recall off the top of my head what they were). Is this the phenomena of "whatever was in the tool bin that day" became your tool kit? I know that the contents of the tool kit can be determined from the owner's manual - but as far as the brands go . . . The day that I spend $200 for a correct wrench will be the day when all my childrens' college tuitions have been paid for, the mortgage had been paid off, and I just can't think of a single other thing that I could possibly buy. I'll just have to live with the guilt of having only partially filled tool pouches - while I drive the hell out of the car every weekend . . .

You might want to contact some of the previous owners about the tools. My 250 GTE came with a pretty complete toolkit, but the wrenches were a mixture of Beta-Auto 55 and Craftsman. I went back to the seller and asked if I could look at her husbands toolbox. As one might guess, I found a mixture of Craftsman and Beta-Auto 55!

The previous owner had the car to drive and never thought of it as a collectors item. Therefore, he did not keep close track of things like tools. I will be going back to their house in a couple of weeks, as I have offered to help her clean out the garage. It will be interesting to see what I find!

By the way, I have yet to find the hub-puller. If anyone has an extra....

Try Parker Hall. Parker makes a beautiful repro tool roll that is correct in every way for $450.00.
The repo wrenches cannot be used as they are cast. You can buy modern Beta 55 wrenches for about $100.00 for the set from gg mecanica in Colorado.
Parker also makes a repro hub puller(very useful) for about $350.00.
I think it is better to have a reasonably correct and usable tool kit rather than a concours correct unusable tool kit.

Hi JSA,
You can call Parker at (601) 638-7856. He is available M-F 6pm to 10pm CST and all day Saturday.
He has a really nice catalogue too.

Brian Gale is the Beta tool distributor. (303) 689-9363. He is in Littleton CO.
I bought the Beta 55 open end wrench kit in a pouch sizes, 6mm to 32mm for under $100.00. These are real and useable and look nearly identical to the originals. They also have wood handle screw drivers available.

Hello All,

I often list "the usual suspects" for Ferrari parts in the "suppliers page."

Repro 330 toolkit on eBay.

Post by Mike Adams »

Just saw a kit with a repro bag and repro tools for the 250/330 pop up on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 1872997418

Maybe a chance for someone to pick up a kit that at least looks right witout emptying the piggybank :)

Looks like it is missing the jack, lead hammer, sparkplug spanner, and hub puller.

What do you suppose this is worth? The bag can be had for $450, and some of the repro tools would maybe push the price a few more bucks (as listed on Tom's site), but the missing bits and non-original items would probably stop this item from selling for several grand.
I do not mind having a non-original one, as this would allow me to actually use the bloody thing...
:)
I am having my upholsterer quote me for the bag. I am curious to see if he could do it for less (probably not).

thx
luke, 250 GTE,
.....just back from a Ferrari trip to the zoo with my 21 month old. The baby seat is a perfect fit in the back. Now I have to test the back facing configuration for my brand new daughter, Isabella, born on November 8th !

The bag is about right at $450.00

The wrenches are current "Beta 55" not the correct "Beta Auto 55" so they are good for about $60.00 US

The carb key is less than $5.00 from www.piercemanifold.com

The FACOM screwdrivers are maybe $20.00

The repro oil filter wrench I think I have seen for $200.00

The hammer is about a $25 piece and is not "correct"

That leaves the grease gun. I just dont know on that one.

But, leaving it out for a second... that gives a total of about $750.00 to recreate what is there. Even allowing $100.00 for a non-correct grease gun, that's $850.

It was interesting when it was in the $450-$600 range. The current price is $1025.00 ; which, I can't justify based on what's there.

I think some bidders believe that a set of "Beta Auto 55" wrenches is included becuase of the "a set of (9) new Beta wrenches that are concours correct..... " statement. And that may be what has pushed the price up.

That or people on eBay are just generally nuts... :)

Thats way too high for me now on Ebay. I'd rather just piece it together myself - there are some great leads that have come out of this thread.

Here's a trick for the thin of wallet...

Back on 11/6/02, Tom posted a pic of a generic lead hammer he found for about $20. I used this same hammer to fill out my toolkit. I stripped of the rubber handle, and applied a couple coats of grey and yellow paint. The results were not THAT bad... After a couple uses, it almost looks right :D

Here is a pic of it along with the other tools in the bag.
