Tom's comment on age of vintage owners

Post by lukek »

It was actually Tom's comment (in some thread, or in person at Concorso) that prompted me to put together a poll (I would have posted here, but no poll facility exists with this software). The poll is about average age of Ferrari owners. If I remember correctly Tom was under the impression that mostly older guys owned these cars, and that he and I were the exception. That observation is often validated at car shows. While the responses are skewed because of the medium, the results are probably pretty reassuring, with 56 people having voted, and the highest percentage going to the 38-48 group, right now....
In the interest of science, can you contribute a vote?

I recently made a similar statement about the age of Alfa 2600 SZ owners. My comments were misinterpreted as "only 70-80 year old people like these cars", which certainly is not the case. I believe the majority of sellers is 70-80 years old, but the majority of buyers (or recent owners) is 30-50 years old.

My experience with restarting the Alfa 2600 SZ register is that many of the older, long-term owners still use telephone and fax machines, but not e-mail or the web. Therefore, an Internet poll may not give you valid results because the older population may not participate and your poll will show the age of Internet savvy owners, but not the age of owners in general, which is still an interesting piece of information.

I have always wanted a regular 2600 coupe. I think it has nice proportions. While the two GTVs I owned were more tossable, I always felt a little claustrophobic in them.
The 2600 used to be the hardest Alfa to sell, but I do not see them too often at dealers or in the classifieds, so this might have changed. The SZ is certainly another story, quite a rare and beautiful automobile.

BTW, I have seen a few old curmudgeons come online, although some of the presence is short lived. When they do, they are an invaluable resource.

Post by horner »

I am now 52. I bought my first Ferrari when I was 35 and have owned them continuously since that time. LJH

I'm 57 and I bought my car last year. I lusted for a Ferrari for 40 years but 2 Corvairs (one a raced Fitch), many station wagons, two kids and a new business took precedence. BTW a age 50 I started counting backwards and now feel 43!

30 when I bought my first one (which I still have), 40 when I got the most recent one (the GTE). I shan't wait until I'm 50 for the next one!

I still beleive there are a lot of older owners who do not participate on the Internet. They may be out there lurking, but I don't think they would vote in a survey.

BTW, Bought my Ferrari at 31, and I'm going to 38 this year.

Sam, I thought I was the oldtimer here...I'll be 56 mid-November, bought my 330 2+2 on 11-30-02. Corvettes were my automotive passion but I always wanted a vintage 12...no going back, any future purchase will have the horse badge and 12 cylinders.

Boy it's get bad when people are bragging about being old. But so far, I've got everybody beat. I'll be 58 in a week or so.

First Ferrari at 35, 2nd-5th at 55, back down to three of which two are running (as of today anyway).
